Editorial Reviews

Review

"Business adviser Cross is a steadfast believer in the power of the American small business. Though half a million new businesses are founded each year, most fail because the founders lack the overarching knowledge of how to run a business. In response, Cross has developed a framework to structure the reader's thinking about how to tackle this challenge. He takes readers through the four dimensions that describe all businesses (needs, positioning, customers, and competencies), his process of Vision Strategy Execution, a business's natural life cycle, managing funds, and demystifying leadership and management, as well as offering scripts for discussions and negotiations, and tips for instituting values a remarkably readable game plan for business success." (Publishers Weekly)

"Cross shares lessons learned from his 25 plus years' experience transforming underperforming companies into industry powerhouses. Today's business environment has shifted from the post-World War II era focus on economies of scale in production and ready access to semiskilled labor, raw materials, and capital to new technologies and lower labor costs. Cross presents solid ideas on how to run smaller enterprises better suited to a 21st-century economy. His practical advice covers how to use simple analytical tools and business metrics to understand the business, how to align all the company's efforts through his "Vision Strategy Execution" structure, and how to review operations continually to take advantage of opportunities and changes in the environment. VERDICT Cross's relatively short guide focuses on pragmatic, realistic suggestions any entrepreneur or CEO can easily adapt to his or her own environment. Recommended for readers interested in starting or running a small business." (Library Journal)

"Take a very bright architect who is trained to know how things 'fit.' Put him in positions of leadership where he invests the front half of his career as a consultant to CEO's and the back half actually being the CEO and what do you get? One incredibly believable person. Read Just Run It! because it will benefit every company leader and provide personal gifts for a lifetime. " (John C. Adams, Retired Chairman and CEO, AutoZone Inc.)

"Save your time and money on consultants. Everything that Dick Cross shares with us comes from one of those rare generous birds who has taken the theoretical and applied it to real time practice of running a company. Just Run It! is a must-read for anyone in management who is searching for strategic enlightenment." (Mike Toth, Founder and Chief Creative Director, Toth & Co)

"Dick Cross's capacity to distill outwardly complicated concepts into comprehensible, value creating action steps is rare. Read the book—you'll learn something and be entertained." (Peter Lamm, Fenway Partners)

"Having owned, operated, and invested in many businesses over the years I can say that Just Run It! goes right to the core of running successful companies—outlining and explaining core platforms succinctly and with emphasis on fundamentals. Dick's focus is 'old school' in that people matter most, both on the inside and with customers/clients on the outside. Just Run It! presents a framework for businesses of all types in dramatically simple and easy-to-read fashion." (Frederic H. Mayerson, Chairman, The Frederic H. Mayerson Group, The Walnut Group)

Just Run It! is a critical reference piece in assessing and managing every investment. The key to success is the best possible understanding up front, a clear vision of where a company can achieve value creation, and most importantly, an actionable plan. (Robert Egan, Alston Capital Partners)

I was fortunate enough to work with a protege of Mr. Cross as I was starting a company. Dick's simplification of the process of how to run a company with vision, strategy, and execution became my mantra, and I didn't even know the original source. The idea of having the ability to run a company on the back of an envelope fascinated me.

Nobody tells you how to run a company. People can tell you their experiences, but never have I seen it documented as Dick has done in his book. I srongly recommend this as a "must read" to anyone trying to "Just Run It".

Having built and run businesses for my entire adult life I realize the overwhelming complexity and uncertainty that can often come with the responsibility of running a business. Which is why I found this book to be a goldmine of practical advice on how to run a business. Cross doesn't float above the clouds in this book with platitudes and concepts. He dives deep into the core of how a business must be run in order to achieve exceptional results from your people, your operations, and your strategy. Frankly, I'm amazed (but thrilled) that after working on a dozen turnarounds Cross took the time to share his knowledge. This is the sort of stuff that rarely gets talked about in books. You'll get an incredible perspective from the trenches on how to build and run your business. Now if I could only build that darn time machine to take me back 20 years, along with Cross' book!

Many executives enter the C-suite missing one crucial piece of information: No-one ever told them how to actually run a business.

And no matter how skilled you may be at your specific functional expertise, if you don't know how to run a business, within days it'll be running you.

Dick Cross know how to run a business - he's done so, successfully, multiple times. In his highly readable new book "Just Run It!", Dick describes a simple, intuitive model that is practical and immediately actionable.

If you're in the C-suite, or headed there, do yourself a favor and read this book.

After twenty plus years as a business leader I sometimes think I have seen it all. But in reality it's not what I see but how I see it. Whether you are a first time or seasoned business leader JUST RUN IT! is worth the read. Dick Cross succeeds in simplifying traditional jargon filled business concepts, starting with customer needs(imagine that) and introduces an easy to understand "Back of the Envelope/Vision-Strategy-Execution" framework that anyone in a business leadership position will find highly useful. I really enjoyed reading this book. It reminded me (again) that even a CEO can learn something new. I think I'll read it again.

With "just" in the title you expect a simplified guide to running a business, what you get is a boring read geared at specific businesses , certainly not small business's ..

As a business owner for the last 15 years I have read many books on how to run my business better. When I finish reading them I always feel that I never quite get what the cover promised. "Just Run It" by Dick Cross is different. Dick calls on his decades of practical experience running many varied companies to offer up a road map for how to actually run your business properly. None of what he writes is theory, he does not spend his time in a classroom teaching others. He is a real life manager, a business man who has an intimate understanding of what business owners face every day. Anyone who owns or runs a business should read Dicks book, when they finish they should read it again. .

I just finished Just Run It and felt inspired enough to write a review, which I have never done before. The book is a great collection of *actionable* advice rather than just dry, uninspired theory. I appreciated the author's use of real-life examples and experience - that is something lacking in other books of this type; I like knowing that the author has done some amazing things and has qualified themself as someone worth listening to and learning from. In short, the book really does distill complicated concepts down into exercises and action that gave me several 'Ah Ha! moments while reading. I also liked the later chapter on the softer side (i.e. courtesy, humility, etc) which I think really rounded out the whole book.

At last there is a primer for running a great business. I wish it had been written 30 years ago. Cross cuts to the chase. I read this great little book on a flight from Atlanta to Boston. And learned more about business than I did in two years of grad school. I plan to buy one for everyone in my management team. Congratulations.
