Amazon.com Review

Who knew the Hamptons was such a hotbed of murder and corruption? In Laura Van Wormer's Just for the Summer, a favor for an old friend turns into a phantasmagoria of sex, money, and death. The protagonist in this tale of murder-most-financial is Mary Liz Scott, a gorgeous 32-year-old investment banker who comes to Long Island to help her godmother go through some financial records belonging to Mary Liz's late godfather. Faster than you can say "junk bond," Mary Liz encounters Julius, Claude, Buck, Charles, Randolph, and a host of other unsavory Hamptonites--all suspects in the death of a shady financier.

Just for the Summer is aptly named, in that it is ideal reading for anyone slightly stunned by too much fun in the sun. Neither the story, the characters, nor the mystery itself will prove too taxing, but certainly Van Wormer's tale of sex, death, and money among Long Island's upper crust will provide hours of breezy entertainment for those long summer days. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Kirkus Reviews

Van Wormer (Jury Duty, 1996, etc.), apparently an insider herself, has the glamorama Hamptons scene down to a T; the real- life celebrities and loosely veiled characters (a Barbara Streisandlike diva, a Donna Karanesque designer, etc.) that fill up the cast here make for a complicated romance/mystery as voyeuristic as it is fun. When Mary Liz Scott retires from investment banking at the tender age of 33, she's ready--for the first time in her life--to relax. She assumes that her godmother Nancy Hoffman's request that Mary Liz head out to East Hampton to help her organize her late husband's estate will provide plenty of opportunities for taking it easy. But Alfred Hoffman's death may not have been an accident, and his peculiar will has the wealthy circles on Long Island abuzz. After just a few days, Mary Liz's office is broken into. Alfred's son Bertie and stepson Julius appear to know far more than they're telling. And even Nancy may have some tricks up her sleeve. Mary Liz's only respite from the madness--Nancy, a charity queen, has her attending functions practically every night--is the young, handsome Sky, a summer golf pro. But in Van Wormer's vision of the Hamptons, people are never what they seem, not even Mary Liz, who immediately installs an alarm system, secures access to Alfred's vaults, and keeps a sharp eye on everyone she meets. When Herbert Glidden (who's suing Nancy for Alfred's estate) dies, Mary Liz realizes that she's truly at risk and enters a race against time to uncover the secrets, solve the murders, and sort out the finances and dirty deals. Like reading the juiciest People magazine possible, with a convoluted yet engrossing plot and a genuine flow of suspense. Best-selling author Laura Van Wormer has been a force in fiction since the publication of "Riverside Drive" in 1988. She is the author of thirteen novels. Her engrossing plots, memorable characters and insider knowledge of the media professions have won praise from the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Good Housekeeping, and People.

After graduating from Darien High School in Connecticut Laura spent a year at the University of Arizona before transferring to Syracuse University, from where she received a B.S. in Public Communications from the S.I. Newhouse School and minored in English.

Upon graduation Laura went to New York looking for a job in television but landed a job instead as secretary to the editor-in-chief of Doubleday & Company. "Every day my head was spinning," Laura says. "Everyone from Leon Uris to William F. Buckley, Jr., Victoria Holt to Phyllis Whitney, Edna O'Brien to Stephen King, Arthur and Alex Hailey to Allen Drury were all publishing with Doubleday at that time."

Laura rose through the editorial ranks somewhat specializing in celebrity and mass media-related books. Caught in a deadline crunch one year, Doubleday and 20th Century Fox flew Laura out to the West Coast to create a book based on the hit series, "Dynasty". Upon her return to New York an offer was made to create a book for the rival show, "Dallas". Laura ended up taking the assignment and leaving Doubleday to write her first novel.

The novel ended up taking four years. To keep body and soul together Laura became "The Official Dallas Historian" (!) and created a game for Lorimar based on the show. She then took on "Knots Landing", wrote copy for the back of jigsaw puzzles and created a game.

Finally she finished her first novel, "Riverside Drive", published in 1988, which is currently in its 5th edition. She has been a full time writer ever since.

Laura is a longtime member of the Authors Guild of America, and also (because of "Jury Duty" and the Sally Harrington mysteries) the Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime. She lives in Connecticut, New York and Shelburne, Nova Scotia.

3.0 out of 5 stars Back to Manhattan after this "vacation," please!, October 6, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Just For The Summer (Hardcover)
I've recently discovered Ms. Van Wormer's novels and had read four others before "Just For The Summer," which I followed with "Any Given Moment" (at last, Alexandra finds love!). Compared to her other multi-charactered studies of the worlds of publishing, broadcasting, etc., "Just..." seems to be shallow and focused on celebrity name-dropping. OK for a summer on the beach, but I hope the next books by this author take the L.I.E. back to Manhattan.

1.0 out of 5 stars I expected fun trash, not boring trash, July 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Just For The Summer (Mass Market Paperback)
I don't expect much in summer paperbacks, but I could not believe how this one dragged. How can someone take a story about murder, rich movie stars on vacation, and romance and end up with something so predictable, trite and boring? None of the characters were interesting or even distinguishable. Worse of all, the writing style was so dully flat that I felt like the author was whacking me on the head with each sentence. There is such a thing as excellent, entertaining trash that evokes emotion - Nora Roberts, Olivia Goldsmith, etc. The only reponse this book evoked was the realization that I wasted an afternoon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grab your towel & sunscreen and head for the beach!, March 19, 1999
This review is from: Just For The Summer (Mass Market Paperback)
Just for the Summer is a great read for the beach! Saturated with celebrities and juicy tidbits about the stars, this book was a tremendously fun read. I lost myself in the frolicking of the wealthy Hamptonites, putting the book down only to refresh my margarita!
