Book Description

August 1, 2004 Mira
"I'm dying. I'm very rich. I have an extremely interesting offer for you."

Kate Lerner, a Chicago radio host, cannot believe what she's reading when the letter comes. It's from her ex-husband, Richard, who disappeared fifteen years ago when their son, Danny, was still a toddler. Not a word, not a dollar has come Kate's way in all that time . . . Until now, when this despicable man has the audacity to come back into her life.

What does it mean? And even though she could surely use some financial help, does Kate really want to find out? Her twin sister, Karen, says of course. Even David, the new man in her life, agrees.

When Kate finally hears about what Richard has to say, she decides that his outlandish proposal is worth one innocent lie to her family. But one lie inevitably leads to another, triggering a chain of events that completely turns her carefuly constructed world upside down.

From Publishers Weekly

Lies threaten to tear a family apart in this second novel by Chicago radio personality Markey (The Daddy Clock). Radio host Kate Lerner hasn't heard from her first husband, Richard Farley, since the day he abandoned her and their infant son, Danny. For 15 years, Kate has worked hard to provide for Danny and her daughter from a second marriage, Sarah Rose, without any support from Richard. But when Richard contacts Kate, telling her that he will be dead within one year and that he will pay her a huge sum if she accompanies him to Italy for one week, she accepts his proposition—Danny will be in college soon and Sarah Rose needs reconstructive surgery for an old burn injury. Without explaining her trip to her twin sister, Karen, her second ex-husband, Tim, or her radio show co-host David Weiland, Kate joins Richard in Rome, where she realizes how very little he has changed and that his motives may be suspect. Back home, Kate tries to repair the damage her deceit has done, finding comfort in the arms of David, who is at her side when even more devastating lies are revealed. Markey adequately captures Kate's turmoil over her deceptions, but this lukewarm, implausible family drama lacks suspense, and its easy conclusion is too good to be true.

From Booklist

When Kate Lerner's long-gone first husband offers to save her financial life if she will only spend a week in Rome with him, she at first dismisses the notion as ludicrous. But her twin sister and her on-air partner at the Chicago radio station where she works both disagree; as the mother of two children--one teenage boy about to enter college and one younger daughter with plenty of medical bills in her future--Kate is in no position to turn away easy money. Not wanting to let her son, Danny, know that his birth father is in the picture, she lies about where she's going, and in order to cover her story, the lies pile up, resulting in a crisis when Danny discovers his mother's deception. Markey, herself a Chicago radio talk show host, has a Susan Isaacs quality to her writing--quick, funny, and realistic--and her rendering of Chicago as an upscale urban setting offers a nice change of pace from the gritty side of the Windy City so often portrayed in crime novels. Entertaining women's fiction. Mary Frances Wilkens

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this chick book!, January 21, 2008
I generally do not read "chick" books - I generally like to stick to heavier, more contemplative subjects. However, I was curious to read this book because I am a fan of her radio show on WGN in Chicago. Although I have never heard her refer to it - I came across it my bookstore and discovered it was in fact written by one half of the "kathy & Judy Show".

In short I loved it! It was fast, funny and took some totally expected turns. I am no literary critic, as I'm sure even the casual reader will be able ascertain, but if being well entertained is any indication of a good book - then this is a very good book.

I guess that makes me, as they say on the radio show, a "girlfriend"!

4.0 out of 5 stars Light reading at its best, August 5, 2005
This review is from: Just Trust Me (Mira) (Hardcover)
I truly did enjoy this novel. It is the first I have read by Ms Markey , and it held my attention.

I don't like to give away the plot in my reviews, so I will simply say, this is a fun book. There are some twists and turns I did not expect . I found her writing style to flow and I read this book in 3 days.

Yes, some parts were truly unbelievable, but isn't that what fiction is all about??

2.0 out of 5 stars High cringe factor for me, April 25, 2005

I really enjoyed her "The Daddy Clock" but this effort was all kinds of wrong. Yes the narrative and the dialog are snappy in parts, but the monumental duplicity that is exercised in this novel really made me wince. I prescribe to the concept that people have secrets and telling your loved ones about actions you've taken can cause more harm than not and hence should not be disclosed, but Kate/Karen just went overboard and the ramifications, while ultimately not catastrophic, still left me with a queasy feeling in my gut.
