3.0 out of 5 stars Be ready to make your own conclusions!, July 23, 1999

This review is from: Just the Way You Are: How Heredity and Experience Create the Individual (Paperback)
I enjoyed the anecdotal references to the case of Monica. The fact that they were able to follow Monica from infancy to adulthood gave the findings a lot of credence. This case appealed to my emotions and motivated me to continue reading. The book itself seemed to jump around a lot. It was difficult to ascertain the point the author was actually trying to make. In fact, it often seemed that she purposely confused the mind in order to cause one to think. "Out of chaos," or so they say. I found that to truly understand the material, I had to reconstruct it in my mind, organizing it into more familiar territory. The vocabulary and conversational style of the author made the book easy to read and understand, other than the slight disorganization I felt. Many of the concepts raised by Ms. Gallagher were quite controversial. In fact, taken out of context, they caused passionate discussions among my peers. Once viewed within the entire scope of the book, however, they were a bit easier to swallow. The book leaves one with the feeling of needing to find closure. No exact conclusions are reached. Various theories and models are presented with conflicting information. This led me to start creating my own conclusions and beliefs, those of which have not yet crystallized. Rather than answer the questions intended, such as, "Who am I? Was I born that way? Or made by my experiences? Why do I do the things I do? How much can I really change?" the

book tends to raise even more questions. Perhaps the author intended us to seek out and continue searching for answers to these questions. I know they were not answered for me.
