Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Whitney Houston recaptures some former glory on her first studio album, thanks to her undiminished vocal prowess and a cadre of impressive producers that includes Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs, Babyface, Teddy Bishop, and Troy Taylor. Houston's pipes shine in the big break-up ballad "On My Own," which is cut from the same mold as 1993's massive "I Will Always Love You." But while her vocal chords are intact, some of the material here leaves much to be desired, including a flat version of Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Light" and the Missy Elliot-penned and -produced "Things You Say." On the plus side, the feisty "Tell Her No" finds Houston on defense, but she's much more interesting with her back against the wall as she huffs: "I can't wait for the day I can rub things in your face." The embattled diva doesn't attempt to gloss over her foibles, as evidenced by "Unashamed" ("Listen here and listen good/ I'm unashamed of the life that I lead, unashamed of the strength of my need"), "Love That Man," and "Whatchulookinat," a body slam at the tabloids that have documented Houston and hubby Bobby Brown's very public falls from grace. Houston may not have recovered her hegemony of the charts, but this album proves she's once again pointed in the right direction. --Jaan Uhelszki

4.0 out of 5 stars Wasn't sure at first- but now i love it!!!, January 24, 2003
By "tamar_leibovich" (petach tikva Israel) - See all my reviews
This new album from the diva is great! it has the uptempo songs, the ballads, the sweet midtempo songs- and one singer with a hell of a voice!!! from start to finish- it's a delight to hear her singing through the cool beats and melodies!
1. whatchulookinat?- i love this song! when it was released though i didn't think much of it, but then it grew on me- and i simply adore the song!!!
2. tell me no- great! i think now, that it should have been the 1st single. very strong.
3. one of those days- her new single- very sweet and relaxing.
4. things you say- a missy elliott song, with tweet backing up the vocals- nice slower song, and if you liked it you should pick up tweet's debut cuz it has pretty much the same sound.
5. my love- cool pop song with her hubby.
6. love that man- another nice pop song. nice vocals!
7. on my own- great ballad!!! the chorus start off exactly like "i will always love you" though, but really- a single for sure!
8. dear john letter- very cool song. like the end...
9. unashames- another great uptempo ballad- very strong too. i like the beat alot!
10. you light up my life- a cover beautifully coverd by whitney! great ballad, with even greater vocals.
11. whatchulookinat? remix- the remix is even hotter than the original- the bridge in it is off da hook, for real!!! love it. cool job diddy...

that's it. i'm just upset it doesn't have more songs, but i guess things like that, the term "short but sweet" ,was made up for!

Those of us who use Amazon review to vent your anger of Whitneys personal life, shame on you. This cd is about Music great excellent music...obviously,she is not at the top of her game but one hateful Star, please. Some American artist are more popular in Asia and Europe because the emphasis is on the quality of the music not the character of the artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whitney's back better then ever!, June 21, 2003
I love Whitney Houston. I really think she is one of the world's greatest singers of all time. After the incredible "my Love Is Your Love" she's had her highs and her lows in both her musical and personal life. Her voice has never sounded better, and the music on this album is just great. The opening number and first single "One of Those Days" is a great feel-good single which was popular on the R&B charts but not so much on the Pop charts. it's so much fun to dance to and her voice really shines. Fans of Carlos Santana will like "Tell Me No" because he does backup guitars and a long intense solo at the end. Kandi Buruss also co-wrote this song and it is very unique. I love Missy Elliot and the fact that she works with whitney. "Things You Say" is beautiful and shows off her lower range as well. Fans of Former New Edition member and huaband to Whitney Bobby Brown will like "My Love" which is a cute little ballad. I love the song "Love That Man" because it's so fun and bouncy. I'd have to say my favorite song is a tie between the beautiful ballad (produced by Babyface) "Try It On My Own" and the great lyric-wise number "Unshamed." Another highlight is a one-of-a-kind remake of "You Light Up My Life." I also like the single "Whatchulookinat." Overall, any fan of Whitney should get this album. My only complaint is that there are only TEN tracks on it. I think the company must have rushed her into releasing it. Whatever the reason is, I still reccomend "Just Whitney'" to Pop and R&B fans. Overall grade: A-
