More About the Author

MERCER MAYER began writing and illustrating children's books in 1966, and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Open almost any of the award-winning author/illustrator's books, and out may pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters.

"Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid," says Mercer. "Now that I'm a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like."

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his home. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completion of his studies, he set out with pen and ink to write and illustrate a collection of children's books, reflecting many of the adventures he experienced as a child.

In 2007, Mr. Mayer was commissioned by Laura Bush to create the artwork used for the National Book Festival held on September 29 on the National Mall. He was an honored guest to the event, giving a demonstration and autographing hundreds of books for fans who attended.

This book absolutely enraptured me as a child back in the 70's, and now, with the anticipated birth of my own first child, this is one of the staple books with which I will start my baby's library. The gentle, sweet storyline combined with charmingly detailed drawings will entertain your little one time after time. There's always something new to discover with each reading, and they will help nurture that special close bond between you and your little one that only comes from sharing wonderful books together. This book is THE classic of Mercer Mayer books, and every child should have a copy of "Just For You", just for them.

This book was a part of my childhood and just recently I was given it again (hardback) for my 25th birthday. After reading it for the first time in many, many years, it was just as I had remembered. Not only are the little critters adorable, but the stories are touching. This book has special meaning to me because as a child, my mother and I would read it together, and I was alot like the little critter in this book. Always trying to do something nice for mom, but somehow messing it up. This book teaches children it is not neccesarily how you do something, but why you did it that means the most!

This was one of the few books I remember as a child and now love to read to my own 4yr old daughter. This one and All By Myself, Just Go To Bed and Just a Toy are, in my opinion, the best Little Critter books! Enjoy!

Mercer Mayer is great at childrens books. When I was a kid, I read my paperback version until the front and back covers fell off. Mayer communicates how children feel with his cute Little Critter characters. The end of each book puts a big smile on my face.

"Just for Yu (You)" is the begining of the "Little Critter" series, a truly iconic series in the world of children's picture books. In this story, Little Critter wants to do something special, just for his Mom. But things always seem to go wrong or something gets in his way. It's just not working out. He tries carry the groceries, but the paper bag (heh --- you don't ever seem to see those anymore) breaks. He tries to put away the dishes, but he slips on the wet floor.

"Just for Yu (You)" is a pleasing picture book that I think just about anyone can identify with. Little Critter is both cute and amusing in his attempts to do something nice for his Mom. The style of illustration in this earlier book is somewhat different from what's seen in the later stories --- somewhat less polished as such. It's a charming look back at the origins of a favorite series.

I loved this book when I was little. It was the very first book I could ever read on my own, too. I loved it so much, in fact, that it was the first book I bought for my son. He is now 3 years old and loves it, too. The thing that really makes me smile about this little critter book, in particular, is that it is truly funny for a preschooler. The eggs sliding down the stove, the bouncy bed, the overfilled bath tub...these made me laugh when I was a kid and they make my son laugh now. The ending always gets me a kiss, too, which all mommies love.

HIGHLY recommend. I would give it ten stars if I could. My all-time favorite.

They're short, they're funny, they're topical, and they're cheap.

This must be one of the first ones - you can see that Little Critter isn't wearing his trademark overalls yet.

He wants to do something special for his mom, but he keeps failing - until the end, when we find out that he succeeded after all. That might go over a young child's head - I guess he succeeded simply by trying? but it's a sweet sentiment anyway.

I read this to my daughter when she was little, and now she reads it to her little boy. It's a sweet, simple story of a little one trying new things, as toddlers do, making mistakes and messes, and being loved and appreciated by his grownups. It's comforting to children and a reminder to parents to be tender and forgiving.
