This review is from: Just Don't Do It: A Fractured and Irreverent Look at the Ph.D. Culture (Paperback)
I won't lie ~ this book DID have it's moments. As a grad student myself (engineering) many of the comparisons and stories rang true about the lunacy of an academic career. Even though this book focused on PhD's in social sciences, many of the same points ring true across the board.Aside from a few moments, this book isn't much to read. What bothered me was the author spent chapters talking about the constant emotional abuse from various committees, but them failed to give examples, stories, or anything other than a "It was so hard but I made it." I mean, C'mon! The author is CLEARLY a talented an funny writer, but when it came to the meat and bones of his book, it didn't have anything! Give us a funny story or two about abuse ~ not just contradicting yourself time and time again or droning in an academic manner about how so many female PhD students are discriminated against. Srsly. |
