From Library Journal
Since 1971, when it started out as the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, Earthjustice has been a major player in environmental defense. Turner, a staff writer for the organization, presents histories of selected legal battles fought by the nonprofit team of attorneys in the past decade, along with background discussion on the role that litigation plays in shaping and enforcing environmental law in the United States. The result is a highly readable civics lesson and a memorial both to the grim consequences of profit pursued without conscience and the heroism of the individuals and organizations that stand up to powerful interests in defense of wild lands and livable human communities. The stories also serve as a status report on trends within environmental law since the author's last summary of important legal cases, published in 1990 as Wild by Law: The Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund and the Places It Has Saved. Complete with new text, new cases, and new photographs, this readable and aesthetically beautiful book belongs in most public libraries. It is also appropriate for academic libraries.
