It was not a book that kept me reading into the night but ok.

I have not read many Karen Robards books, but the ones I have read are making me a fan.

I also thought both main characters were really annoying and not well-written at all.

I started reading Karen Robards several years ago, when I picked up a copy of Bait at my local library. I fell in love with her style of romance and suspense, but what compelled me to find and read her other works were the characters she created that really drive the story. Since then I've begun purchasing her new books almost on auto-pilot, as soon as I see she has a new one coming out. Pursuit I loved. Justice... not so much.

There were a couple of things that bothered me about this book. First, the characterization of some of the principals surprised me, Mark in particular. I had a hard time understanding his motives and that made it difficult for me to champion their relationship. He proposes marriage to Jess, and then betrays her by kissing her boss, one of his many ex-lovers, in what he later describes as a "hot, salacious kiss," but she's supposed to forgive him because it was only a kiss, not an affair, and really it's her fault for pushing him away, and she has screwed up attitudes about men... Really? (Is it any wonder why?) In terms of relationships, he comes across as completely unsupportive and untrustworthy to me, a huge departure from his character in Pursuit. Consequently, I completely understood Jess's reluctance to renew her relationship with him, even at the end of the book, refusing to commit to any sort of permanent arrangement. Thankfully, his willingness to protect her and the lengths he goes to for her keep him from being completely irredeemable.

This was a good, twisting read! Jess is supposed to be keeping a low profile because as the only witness to a major murder, she doesn't need the media attention. The problem is with her first big win at a new firm, she is photographed along with the whole defense team. This media attention brings Mark back into her life. Mark is her ex boyfriend and also the secret service agent who has been assigned to protect her. Questions start piling up like why did the victim recant on the stand? Was she forced? Where did the attorney that Jess replaced really disappear to? And last, why is someone now targeting Jess?
I thought the first chapter was perfect! It set the stage for the entire book so well. Jess is such a strong character but she does have her vulnerabilities...such as Mark. Mark is determined to keep Jess safe from whoever is trying to kill her but the distraction she presents is amusing to 'watch'. There are plenty of plot twists and surprises to keep you turning the pages all night!
I rate this a 4/5. I really liked it but be warned it isn't a 'clean' read by any stretch of the imagination.
Thank you to Gallery Books for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

This book was a great follow up to Pursuit. It was a good stand alone book on its own so I wouldn't call it a sequel, but it dovetailed nicely with the first book.

The book was just a good solid romantic suspense read. Marc and Jess's relationship seemed more realistic in this book and, again, meshed nicely with the book in which they first met. Their relationship began under extremely trying circumstances and, afterward, each of them had baggage to work thru in this book.

A disconcerting note about the book was the odd bit at the end where the youth detention center was being investigated for wrong doing. In the beginning, the two young girls at the heart of the story escape from the center and we are only told that "it is a bad place to be at night". Nothing else is brought out about the center but at the very end of the book, Ms. Robards seems to be tying up a loose end that really didn't exist.

An enjoyable read.

Criminal attorney Jessica Ford is the Secret Service's witness protection program after being the only survivor and witness to the murder of the First Lady. But she doesn't relocate and after replacing a former associate that left on a high profile case that gets her notice, someone is out to kill her. Little does anyone know (except two runaway teenagers), the associate was murdered also.

Karen Robard's tale of legal intrigue and the powers that be makes for one gripping novel. There is tense moments, romance and lots of action. I was a little let done with the climax but the ending made me let that pass.

Attorney Allison Howard agrees to marry her lover Greg Sullivan. They race to her house so she packs a suitcase and has something to wear as they go to Vegas to tie the knot. Unknown to both of them, two runaways from juvenile institution Shelter House are hiding under the bed when Greg snaps Allison's neck. The youngsters flee from the house, but Greg sees them.

Jessica Ford is in court working a high profile rape case in which the accused is a senator's son. While questioning the victim Tiffany Higgs, she suddenly admits to lying; saying she had consensual sex with Rob Phillips. The lawyers are so pleased with Jessica's win that she is transferred to the sixth floor working on a high profile layer's team. Secret Service Agent Mark Ryan returns into Jessica's life because one of the men who knew the First Lady's death was murder has been killed. Mark fears someone is tying up loose ends with Jess and him the remaining witnesses. He plans to keep her safe and hopes she gives him a second chance as several attempts on her life occur.

This legal thriller is filled with action yet readers get to know and understand the myriad of emotions of the prime protagonists. The key to exhilarating tale is that the readers senses the romance in the air everywhere the pair appears, but it is cleverly kept in the background of the suspense as a deadly assassin is coming for Jessica and Rob. With several other strong subplots that blend into the prime story line, Karen Robards provides a superlative thriller.
