Book Description

May 1, 2008 Justice League of America (Graphic Audio)
When a mass outbreak of super-powered individuals threatens the world, the JLA determines that latent metahuman abilities are being triggered by an alien contagion, one that's spreading throughout Earth as it transforms its hosts into monstrous engines of destruction. Racing to contain the infection, the world's greatest super heroes link the parasitic plague to an alien invasion from the team's earliest days and make a horrifying discovery: the JLA itself is responsible for the imminent disaster they now face.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Capitalizing on their success with DC Comics' Infinite Crisis and 52,Graphic Audio is producing several more polished book-based stories from DC. The Justice League of America encounter a wide proliferation of meta-humans (who all sound like they come from the U.K.) who transform into bug-like creatures that burrow into the earth and reemerge to wreak havoc. Though the episodic story lacks the development and sophistication of the company's previous productions, GraphicAudio still creates a beautiful mix of dialogue, sound effects and background music. Disappointingly, much of the soundtrack has been recycled from previous productions. Richard Rohan's narration still captivates with its deep tone and sense of immediacy. A Pocket Star paperback. Review

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Lantern what more could any science-fiction fan want? This stunning production brings them all together as the Justice League series continues, casting our favorite heroes against a strange alien force that is spreading across the earth at a rapid pace. With eerie background music and realistic sound effects, listening is close to leaping into the pages of a comic book and experiencing the action firsthand. With a talented cast of actors, including James Konicek, Colleen Delany, and Andy Clemence, this production is the best in the series thus far, whisking listeners off to the furthest reaches of the globe and never sounding the slightest bit cheesy. Director Richard Rohan guides the way, striking a balance between the story and the intense action. L.B. --Audiofile Magazine 2008

I'd like to emphasize how wonderful Graphic Audio's productions are when converting a novel to audiobook. The music, sound effects and voice work really place you into the action and keep you glued to the audiobook. There were times where I would intentionally drive slower when listening in the car or find more housework to do so I could wait that much longer before I had to shut off the audiobook. It reminds me of the old radio serials where your imagination worked to move the story along. However, comparing this audiobook with a radio program is like comparing (to stay in the comic book genre) the 60s Batman television series to the 2008 theatrical release of The Dark Knight. The cast of voices all perform their roles as superheroes while the narrator pushes the non-dialogue sections of the book, creating a constant flow of storytelling mixed with superb sound effects and music. When Graphic Audio promises "A movie in your mind," not only do they deliver, they deliver with a punch. --SF Site 2008

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! This is how it should be done!, August 19, 2008

This review is from: Justice League of America - JLA: Exterminators (DC COMICS) (Justice League of America (Graphic Audio)) (Audio CD)
This may not be a standard-style audio book, but it is so much more: it is truly an audio graphic novel! Imagine that all of the sound effects, dialogue and thought processes that are in a graphic novel and they are well represented here!
I have been a fan of DC audio books since Kingdom Come, but this one really made my car shake (listened to on a trip out of state). You could feel Superman's punches, and the overall pandemonium of multiple heroes attacking alien's is astounding.
One thing: if you are a stickler for continuity, you will need to consider that in this version of the League, Young Justice and Red Tornado are still active (which means Superboy is alive and Bart is still Impulse, along with the Secret being active). It was neat trying to piece together who was involved (mentions of Doom Patrol as well as other teams were all over the place) and hearing the actor's representations of such iconic heroes is actually very good.
This is a must buy and just so you know, I already have the next volume purchased and awaiting me in my car as we speak - I was that excited.
Great job by Graphic Audio and if you like this, check out their other fantastic DC audio graphic novels - 52 was the last one before this. They are well worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a true audiobook, more like an audio play, August 9, 2008

While there is a good chunk of narration on this, the action is actually driven by multiple voice actors reading dialogue with sound effects and music. Kind of strange, like it's the audio track of a movie you can't see. As I understand it, a chunk of the dialogue was actually written just for this recording, and isn't actually from the book. I liked this format, and I thought most of the voice acting was very good. But if you're looking for a "normal" audiobook where someone just reads what the author wrote, this isn't it. Still, I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to try out something new (or who is a Justice League fan).

28 Actors

Graphic audio published the audio version of a DC Comics graphic novel featuring the Justice Leauge of America. Graphic Audio boasts that it is "A Movie In Your Mind" and while that may be a bit of an exaggeration, it is every bit as good as those old radio plays that, if you're lucky, a local radio station may play from time to time. Graphic Audio has 28 actors (if my count was correct as they named them all), music, lots of special effects and they use them all to create a thoroughly engrossing story.

There is nothing particularly new in "JLA: Exterminators". A wave of new "meta-humans" are popping up all over the globe with one thing in common (besides super powers): they were all in the UK about 10 years previously and were exposed to something that gave them these new powers.

The Flash and The Green Lantern become friends with a new meta-human with telekenisis and the audience is given a perspective on both sides of this issue - the old superheroes and the new ones, some good and some bad. I was reminded of that old TV show, Greatest American Hero, as their new friend, Ian, struggles with the desire to be a regular guy and the desire to use his new powers for good.

Later, things start to go even more haywire and giant monsters begin stomping around in just about every metropolitan area in the world, including Metropolis, Hong Kong, Long Beach, Edinburgh, Paris and especially London. Somehow, Gothem City is not pestered by this homage to Godzilla movies. These monsters are tough and the JLA has to call out anyone and everyone to stop them (except the military, which is featured big-time in a similar problem 10 years ago but is strangely absent while Superman gets thrown through entire buildings).
''
The audiobook features The Flash, The Green Lantern, Aquaman, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Martian Manhunter throughout. The Atom gets extended focus later on and eventually everyone gets called in including the retired versions of Flash and Green Lantern, Nightwing, the Titans, Steel, Black Lightning, Superboy, Wonder Girl, the Blue Beatle and pretty much everyone in the DC universe except for the Bizarro world folks.

In the end, Superman, Batman and the Martian Manhunter spend way too much time agonizing over whether or not to destroy these giant monsters that are destroying buildings by the minute and killing untold thousands. That over-thinking is not something that generally plagues Batman, but in this case it got annoying. For the record, I am all for killing giant alien monsters that are destroying the world's urban centers - without delay! The Flash and The Green Lantern respond by blowing off this psychological self doubt by asking if they should have gone ahead and let them destroy the cities? No, is the answer. Then move on.

I've done a lot of critical observations here but the question is, is this an entertaining audiobook?

Yes!

Lots of fun - very entertaining. The multi-actor old-fashioned radio play format works very well.
