3.0 out of 5 stars JLU The Ties That Bind, February 11, 2009

This review is from: Justice League Unlimited: The Ties That Bind (Paperback)
I don't normally read comic books or graphic novels. I am, however, a big fan of the Justice League/JLU animated series. Since the show has ended & I have all the episodes on DVD & I'm still left wanting more, I thought I'd try the comic books. This is the first one I bought. I realize that it's out of order but the other books are rather expensive.

This book features 7 stories. (I'm assuming that each story was originally published as a single comic book.) These stories are: #16 "Smashing Through the Snow," #17 "Let Freedom Ring," #18 "Fare 48," #19 "The Justice Rangers Ride Again," #20 "Just Us Girls," #21 "Stormy Weather," & #22 "Outside Looking In."

The illustrations are pretty close to what we see in the animated series. There were a few weird cells. I'm not sure if it's a problem in all the books or just mine. There's one where Star Girl's face is missing & another, featuring Atom Smasher, where there's an unusual mass in the picture & I'm not sure what it's supposed to be.

The storylines are pretty good. They seem geared more towards children. We get to see a little more of the heroes that were only featured as background or supporting characters in the series (Atom Smasher, Gypsy, Mary Marvel, Elongated Man, Vigilante). There is also an appearance by several heroes that were not featured in the show, The "Freedom Fighters" (Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady, Human Bomb, Black Condor, Doll Man, & The Ray-father of JLU's Ray).

If you're more interest in the original 7, you'll find stories featuring Hawkgirl, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, & Flash. Batman only has one minor part in one of the stories. One addition to the League that I found odd was Power Girl, considering she was an enemy in the TV series. Of course, it's possible that she joined the league in one of the earlier comic book stories that I haven't read, yet.

Since this is essentially my first comic book, I have no standards to compare it to on that level. So, I will only recommend this book to fans of the TV series that are longing for more JL action.

For those who have subscribed to the Justice League comic book series now knows it's been canceled sadly. But we can collect the series in the graphic novel series. For those who haven't read the previous issues can now read them in the graphic novels. Ties That Binds contains all these issues:

Issue #16 - Smashing Through the Snow!
t's Christmas with the Justice League! Supergirl, Atom Smasher and some of the team's younger members have monitor duty over the holiday, but their night might not be so silent when Girder breaks out of Iron Heights Penitentiary!

Issue #17 - Let Freedom Ring
The Justice League versus the Freedom Fighters! When the League becomes a threat to public safety, the U.S. government calls in America's real heroes to take them down.

Issue #18 - Fare 48
In the deep reaches of outer space, Superman lies injured and powerless on a remote planet under a red sun. And the only one who can save the Man of Steel is...Space Cabby?

Issue #19 - The Justice Rangers Ride Again!
Wonder Woman, Elongated Man and Vigilante track a sinister time traveller back to the Old West. But it's going to take the help of Jonah Hex, Bat Lash and El Diablo for them to stand a chance against the Time Commander! Guns are a 'blazin' in "The Justice Rangers Ride Again!"

Issue #20 - Just Us Girls
Mary Marvel is feeling a little overwhelmed at the Justice League Watchtower, so Supergirl decides to take her out to watch an actual League mission. But when that mission goes bad, and Wonder Woman's strike team finds itself on the verge of defeat, does Mary have what it takes to step up and save the day?

Issue #21 - Stormy Weather
A lovers' quarrel between Heat Wave and Killer Frost threatens to blow apart Star City! JLU lovebirds Green Lantern, Vixen, Green Arrow and Black Canary arrive to save the day, but when they begin to have similar flare-ups, will Star City suffer the consequences?

Issue #22 - Outside Looking In
Gypsy's impetuousness causes Martian Manhunter and the rest of the JLU team to distrust her dire warnings. Can she convince them to listen when she learns that heads of state are imperiled by an army of giant killer robots?
