Book Description

July 16, 1984 0819141739 978-0819141736
Using George Orwell's 1984 as a backdrop, this volume examines existing trends and future directions in the use of electronic surveillance, lie detectors, and aversive "treatment" of criminal offenders. Also assesses the outlook for innovative methods of crime control, such as the prediction of criminal behavior and the techniques used in utopian communities.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In this concise, well researched volume, Albanese suggests that there are better methods for crime control than those against which Orwell warned in 1984. The message is clear) justice can, indeed, be served without threats to our personal privacy....it is refreshing to find a book which suggests the exploration of the correlates of low crime societies that are characterized by social harmony....>>> (Freda Adler )

More About the Author

Hello! I am a criminologist and professor in the Wilder School of Government & Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University, also serving as Chief of the International Center at the National Institute of Justice from 2002-2006. I have traveled widely and have written and edited 15 books. I enjoy teaching, talking about important ideas, and finding links between the great ideas and both the classic and popular literature and movies! My most recent books include: Organized Crime in Our Times (Elsevier, 6th ed., 2011), Transnational Crime and the 21st Century (Oxford University Press, 2011), and Professional Ethics in Criminal Justice: Being Ethical When No One is Looking (Prentice Hall, 3rd ed., 2012). My motto is this: life is short, so let's not waste it on trivial pursuits! (although I love soccer, the movies, good coffee, a well-made drink, among other "worthwhile" interests!)
