Palmieri el Maestro, October 12, 2006
This review is from: Justicia (Audio CD)
A jewel of an album. This album's importance lies in Palmieri's socio-political stance. Prior to this, Palmieri's albums dealt mainly with dancing and making love. The times were changing and so was the music.
Latino's in New York like in other urban cities were undergoing enormous changes. There were calls for change on many fronts and the Latino, in finding a new voice for protest, was pushing the political envelope. Independence movements, FALN, Young Lords, Hostos College protests, were some of the changes taking place, some positive others not. Crime and drugs was rampant and the needs of the poor of the inner-city were being neglected by the political machine.
Palmieri somehow tapped the into this climate with Justicia, a wonderful musical statement that became a sort of anthem for us Latinos.
Justicia and Verdict on Judge Street were the social statements while the tracks, Lindo Yambu and Spiritual Indian reminded listeners that the Almighty was the anchor thru it all. On the tracks, Amor Ciego and Somewhere, Palmieri gave us his affirming view that love was indeed the message.
As always, the arrangements are smokers. Justicia opens the album with a fire that sets the musical and political tone for the rest of the set. Worth the price of the cd on it's own. Lindo Yambu and Spiritual Indian exceptional tunes by Palmieri and company. You owe it to yourself to at least give this a listen. In this album you get Latin music, ak (commercially as salsa) reaching musical maturity. With this release Palmieri explores serious topics that are miles away from the usual, have a good time party theme that was so prevalent in Latin music prior to this. The last 4 tracks are not really up to Palmieri's high musical standards but no matter, this cd is worth it.

A good Eddie Palmieri album but one that is not for everyone., December 31, 2011
I will first say that this album is not for everyone. Eddie Palmieri was and is an artist who has always refused to conform to established norms, rules and patterns--in fact, you could say he has always stretched Latin music's limits beyond what others could even think of doing and that (in the 1960s and '70s) he was doing today what others would be doing 10 years later. That having been said, I do admit that this album DOES have some straight-ahead instrumental Jazz numbers which would probably not be palatable to fans of traditional Latin music but Eddie has always (then again) always said that he is as much a lover, fan and student of American Jazz as he is of traditional Latin music. The title track was a huge hit, Ismael Quintana's rendition of the classic Bolero "Amor Ciego" and the unabashedly Cuban-flavored "Lindo Yambu" are both superb and "My Spiritual Indian" is commendably adventuruous and experimental. If you are a true Eddie Palmieri fan or devotee, you will undoubtedly want this CD in your collection but at the same time you (should) probably know Eddie recorded quite a few much better albums for Tico Records than this one.

Wonderful album by Palmieri, April 13, 2011
This review is from: Justicia (Audio CD)
This album is a very creative mix of different sounds by the great Eddie Palmieri. You'll find his signature New York hard-hitting salsa, bolero and very funky jazz. The title track "Justicia" is one of his best all-time songs all the way up there (and in my opinion, better) than Vamonos Pa'l Monte. The song has a very good social criticism and the injustice of racism. One has to wonder exactly as the chorus says:"Cuando llegara la justicia?" This version (there are several renditions) is by far the best one, with awesome singing by Ismael Quintana and a killer bongo solo that sets this song on fire. So on basis of this track only, the album is great and the rest of it is icing on the cake. As I said in the beginning, the there's something for all and it not only displays Palmieri's great music, but Quintana's versatile and captivating singing skills. A+ in every aspect.
