Editorial Reviews

In a rare Los Angeles appearance, acclaimed author Elmore Leonard is joined onstage by "Justified" star Timothy Olyphant (Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens) and Graham Yost (co-creator & executive producer) in celebration of the release of Leonard's latest novel "Raylan."

This Paley Center for Media live event spotlights "Justified," the police drama about Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, an officer with cowboy-like crime-fighting techniques.

Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media/Los Angeles) offers opening remarks and welcomes Andrea Grossman (founder, Writers Bloc Presents) to the stage.

Grossman moderates the following panelists: series creator/executive producer Graham Yost; executive producer Elmore Leonard (author of novels featuring "Justified" character Raylan Givens); and cast member Timothy Olyphant (Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens).

The panelists touch on such topics as: the appeal of Raylan as a television hero; how Raylan differs from the character Olyphant played on HBO's "Deadwood"; and the challenge of properly adapting Leonard's material for television.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the vocal cadences and peculiarities of the "Justified" characters; the variety of actors who ask Yost if they can be part of the series; and why Kentucky mining is such a prevalent theme in all of Leonard's Raylan tales.

If you love the TV show, 'Justified' (and the Elmore Leonard stories that continue to inspire it), as much as I do, then this edition of "Live at the Paley Center" is for you. Author Elmore Leonard, Creator/Show Runner Graham Yost, and star of 'Justified' Timothy Olyphant are all on hand for an informative discussion of the show, how it came to be, how they continue to produce some of the best dialogue on television, and much more. They answer questions from both the moderator and the audience. It runs 60 minutes.

The respect, humility, and admiration held among these professionals is evident and sincere. Leonard is a pro, as are Yost and Olyphant; altogether, they make a phenomenal team. Having read 'Fire in the Hole' and 'Raylan' (available on Amazon), this tribute to the iconic 87-year-old author, Elmore Leonard ('Get Shorty,' 'Out of Sight,' and '3:10 to Yuma'), his stories (including the one about his impeccable work ethic) were something I enjoyed and appreciated learning about, very much. The characters he created in both US Marshals Karen Sisco and Raylan Givens are both now iconic, themselves.

I've become a Justified addict. The show is smart, darkly funny, intense, and well-acted across the board. These folks actually get Elmore Leonard right. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he is credited as a producer of the show. I am also geeky enough to enjoy the occasional 'behind the scenes' show. So, when I saw this I jumped. I gave it a good try, I really did. But whatever energy Justified has is altogether missing here. Elmore Leonard looks ancient and tired. Timothy Olyphant looks bored out of his mind. Graham Yost is the only one with any life in him. The questions are on the lame side and a bit worshipful. Admittedly, Elmore Leonard is a living legend and Timothy Olyphant is both pretty and a fine actor. Still, there have to be more interesting questions and more engaged answers. My advice: stick with the show and just pretend you never heard of this 'behind the scenes' interview.

Outstanding program involving a great writer interacting in a relaxed and interesting manner with the producer and star of one of the best series on TV. These are three guys who are pros, very talented and whose interaction is a joy to behold. Respectful but not revertential, talented but not self conscious, and filled with humor. They are clearly comfortable themselves and with each other. No wonder the show is so great. These guys are fun to be around.
Yost's puckish remark about borrowing from certain Elmore books whose rights Yost had not purchased, is wonderful.
The cadence and skill of Elmore's writing is revealed by his personality and quick wit. Each comment is salient- but economical. The words are effective and not wasted. Timothy Olyphant is a consummate actor, as his many fine performances on TV and in film demonstrate. He is very bright and understands the appeal and the essence not only of the show and his character, but also his own star power. Yet he is clearly comfortable and not carried away with himself. His comments about not wanting to go "over the top" on his accent, like his wonderful co star does often, and about how he applies himself to the context and script and doesn't worry about how he is appearing or the "meaning" of his performances, reveal a first rate actor- and also an apparently well grounded person. Very gratifying to see so much of Raylan in this fine actor.
Thanks for this insight and special experience.

The daffy host of the talk is obnoxious, meanders, and generally can't find "the point" with both hands. Once we get to the panelists, (far too late,) it's fairly interesting.

The hostess tries hard, knows her stuff, but comes off awkward. Elmore Leonard and Tim Olyphant and even Graham Yost do not want to be there. Skip this and enjoy the books and the show.

Love the Justified program! Thought this interview would be interesting and insightful. Wrong! The woman (erased her name from memory!) hosting this mess was horrible at the job!!

Funny interview, Mr. Leonard is my favorite author, you can see why Justified is such a hit, it plays just like he writes.
