Although the FX series "Justified" has just begun its fourth season, we are only now being treated to a sampling of the music from the show. It was worth the wait!

The album leads off with the show's main title theme "Long Hard Times To Come," the utterly captivating blend of bluegrass guitars and banjos with rap. You get the full track here, not just the truncated version they use on the show. If you haven't already checked out Gangstagrass's other efforts, you should do so. This is followed by Dave Alvin's reverb-and-echo-drenched "Harlan County Line," a fine mid-tempo blues with a suitably deep, throaty vocal. Next up is Beverly Staunton's soulful take on the classic country ballad "Stand By Your Man." A standout.

The album takes a tonal shift into funk-rock territory next, with Bill Champlin and Steve Porcaro's "Devil At The Wheel." I liked it, but it seems a bit out of place with the rest of the material. Next we have Lynda Kay's bluesy ballad "Dream My Darling," a tune she co-wrote with Johnny Edwards. Her voice puts me in mind of Patsy Cline, both in range and phrasing. Nice.

We're back in bluegrass territory next, with the Cumberland River Band's "Justified." Pleasant enough, especially if you like bluegrass (which I do), but nothing special lyrically or instrumentally. Robert J. Walsh does much better with the swampy, slide-infused "Southfield Blues." This is followed by a fairly pedestrian country tune, "We Lost It," by Jesse Dayton and Brennen Leigh, from their 2007 album "Holdin' Our Own."

Things get better immediately, though, with Lynda Kay's "Jack and Coke," another original tune of hers that showcases her flair for the honky-tonk style.

With the fourth season of this great series in full throttle it's a perfect time to FINALLY see a soundtrack cd released. Although I myself would have liked a "non country" song or two included ( Mike Snow's "Sans Soleil" from the closing minutes of the first season's initial episode comes to mind ), I cannot complain at all. This album really puts you into Harlan County alongside Raylan Givens, with the full version of the trademark title tune and "Stand by Your Man" the standouts in my book. Hopefully an additional album with more tunes and maybe even some snippets of memorable dialog from this extremely well written show sprinkled in will be forthcoming, but for now I would definitely recommend all "Justified" fans to give this a listen. This was well worth the wait.

From the glorious Gangstagrass series theme that kicks off the album to the final track this album evokes the cool of lawman Raylan Givens and the Harlan County of 'Justified'. The album is many things, and amongst them is a fitting musical homage to the superb talent of iconic writer Elmore Leonard, and a beautiful collection of music. Highlights for me were the glorious bluesy swirl of Dave Alvin's 'Harlan County Line' and his barnstorming 'Beautiful City 'Cross the River'. There is also a strong and heartfelt version of 'Stand By Your Man' by Beverley Staunton, the Bluegrass toe tapper 'Justified' by the Cumberland River Band, and 'Jack and Coke' by Lynda Kay. The album is notable for the number of songs that actually reference the series, the moods of the world that it inhabits, and by the end you too are in Harlan County and maybe you can imagine a certain Marshall is warning you off the poisoned moonshine of Mags Bennett. Oh hell yeah.

One of the things I love about Justified is the great soundtrack; I particularly enjoy the gangstagrass. The music on this cd is all good and does not disappoint, but I wish there was a program that described which episode individual songs come from.

this is a mixture of bluegrass, soul, rock, and blues. I love it!! it will make you want to watch the show. [on fx tues. at 9pm central time.] p.s. this show is very graphic, and you might want to keep the kids away, but the shows great, too.
