This review is from: Justinian and the Later Roman Empire (Paperback)
John Barker is at the top of his game in "Justinian & The Later Roman Empire." He successfully describes Justinian I, the peasant, the husband, the Emperor, the person. At the same time Barker does not allow himself to become trapped by the individual, and he accurately describes the state of the Byzantine Empire before, during, and after Justinian. The provided illustrations lend interest and help bring the story to life. Barker is to be commended for describing a turning point in Byzantine history in a single, comprehensively written book. |
