OSHA Compliant Oily Waste Cans are essential whenever solvent soaked cloths and wiping rags are used. Rags and cloths soaked with solvents, thinners, linseed oil, combustible adhesives and other flammable liquids present a serious fire risk when improperly discarded. The specially designedlid opens no more than 60 degrees and stays closed when not in use, isolating contents from fire sources and limiting oxygen so spontaneous combustion risk is virtually eliminated. Round construction and elevated bottom encourage circulation of air around can to disperse heat and reduce moisture buildup and rusting. Just Rite 09100 - 6 Gallon Oily Waste Can

This is the smallest model oily waste can with a foot-operated cover that Just Rite makes. It's slightly larger than a 5-gallon bucket, which makes it a good choice for the homeowner or business with small quantities of oily rags to dispose of.

Press your foot on the pedal and the lid opens about 60 degrees. Remove you foot and it closes immediately, and stays closed when not in use. Although it doesn't have an air-tight seal (for obvious reasons), it blocks rag smells and fumes from permeating your workshop. I.e., you only smell the rags when the lid is open.

Overall build quality is first rate. The sheet-metal is strong and the powder-coat paint is well done.

When using the steel loop handle to carry the can, the lid stays shut. The can's top and lid are rolled steel for strength.

This heavy duty galvanized can is designed to be a safe container for oily rags. It's also ideal for cloth or paper rags damp with oil, paint thinner, turpentine, oil-based stains, oil-based paint, alcohol, kerosene, diesel fuel, gasoline, or any other flammable liquid.

Justrite sells identical cans in either red or yellow, in case you want to segregate materials or to differentiate a location site. Or, maybe you prefer one color over the other.

spontaneous combustion; noun: Self-ignition of combustible material such as oily rags, through chemical action (as oxidation) of its constituents, also called spontaneous ignition.

If rags self-ignited inside the closed can, the fire would quickly extinguish when the oxygen is consumed. The inside bottom of the receptacle is several inches above the can's bottom, so heat can't make contact with the floor. The holes in the can's bottom perimeter disperse heat in the event of an internal fire. Thus, the can is safe to leave on a wooden floor. The "instructions" on the can say to empty it daily, which is fine if it's filled daily. Mine is in a home workshop, and I empty it when it's full, which can take weeks.

If you are concerned about the spontaneous combustion which might occur by throwing oily rags into a regular trash can, this product will bring peace of mind, and actual fire protection.

It's hard to find product these days than have some quality to them, this however is one that does. I would recommend this product to anyone that needs some fire protection for flammable rags used in one's garage next to a water heater.

This would be unsightly and overkill inside the house however, we use this for keeping our pet scooping and it works out great. We leave it outside of course. The cover seals well and it holds a good amount and has not started rusting at all.
