Book Description

October 9, 2001
Sexual homicide is murder committed in tandem with either an overt sexual assault or sexually symbolic behavior. This type of murder carried out by youths is one of the rarest and most poorly understood crimes. How can young people carry out such horrific crimes? Do the offenders have anything in common? Do they show any warning signs? This book highlights groundbreaking research that begins to find the answers to these questions.

Juvenile Sexual Homicide is the first book to take a comprehensive look at this specific type of crime and attempt to understand the young criminals involved. It is based on a 10-year study that evaluates a sample of juvenile sexual murderers and provides a revealing look at the psychopathology, personality, criminal, and behavioral characteristics of their offenses. Roger Blashfield, Mark Safarik, and Linda Monaco are contributing authors.

Part I reviews the origins and framework of the research sample and provides a comprehensive overview of sexual homicide. Part II delves deeply into the criminal aspects of the sample study in relation to various mental disorders. Personal findings and psychopathy of the offenders are revealed in addition to the investigation into the role of anger in the crimes. Part III presents a more in-depth look at special issues and circumstances surrounding the juveniles and their crimes.

The first in-depth study of juvenile sexual murderers
A revealing look at the interaction between mental illness, personality function and crime characteristics

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an interesting book about an understudied and misunderstood sub-segment of the population. Case examples provide chilling descriptions of the crimes, and give a unique look into the motivations, desires, and thought processes of these individuals...a good beginning to what one hopes is further advances in research." -Steven T. Herron, Stanford University Medical Center, for DOODY'S

...this short book should interest clinicians who work with adolescents because it graphically presents the thoughts, fantasies, and psychodynamics of many distured teenagers... Myers located and studied 16 young men convicted of sexual homicide, who apparently constitute the largest number of such subjects ever reported in one publication. ...Perhaps therapists who read this book will be able to prevent future sexual homicides. - William Bernet, M.D., Vanderbuilt University School of Medicine in the Journal of Clinical Psyschiatry

Now there is another psychiatrist and researcher names Wade Myers, who will take his deserved place among a small but highly accomplished group of scholars on sexual homicide. Juvenile Sexual Homicide is a gem of a book and is the culmination of Myers' 10-year study of 16 boys who have each intentionally killed the object of their sexual desire. Juvenile Sexual Homicide is a major contribution to one's understanding of juvenile violence and sexual offending. The publisher is also to be commended for the quality of the physical rendering of this book, including the drawings and photographs, which will both unsettle and fascinate the reader. - Contemporary Psychology

3.0 out of 5 stars too creepy, September 27, 2002
This review is from: Juvenile Sexual Homicide (Hardcover)
Although this is certainly an important topic, I don't think it should be accessible to children. It's too disturbing.
