This review is from: Koln Concert (Audio CD)
Vert is Adam Butler, and his work on the improvised live record "The Köln Konzert" is brilliant. Influenced heavily by the piano improvisations of Keith Jarrett (two of the tracks are Jarrett originals), Vert's performance is based heavily on upright piano performance, with added effects and electronics. The first time I heard Vert was on the Sonig compilation (Sonig is Mouse on Mars' label) on Thrill Jockey. The track on there is only an indication of the great things you'll find on this album. It is out domestically on Thrill Jockey in the US and is significantly cheaper by that standard; for some reason it isn't here on the site yet, just FYI. This import version includes one extra track. Anyway, Vert relies significantly less on electronic devices than most of the other Sonig artists, and this lends it a more humanistic, almost frail quality (the upright is not 100% tuned, in a charming sort of way). Brilliant, I can't say it enough. Buy it! |
