Kaiten's origin:

Kaiten is based on the popular open source app K-9 Mail and was built by K-9's lead developers Jesse and Chris. By buying Kaiten you not only get an awesome email client, you also support the open source version because almost all of the new features are contributed to K-9 Mail.

The name is a play on K-9. Kaiten is a Japanese word that means rotation and sounds a lot like K10 or K-10.

I use K9 Mail on my android phone and wanted a similar product designed for larger screens. Kaiten appeared to fill the bill--it is a fork of K9 Mail. Account setup and was easy--I'm using it with multiple IMAP accounts and the ability to aggregate into a single inbox is nice. Unfortunately, the product is chronically unstable on my Kindle Fire. It force closes often when I click to open an email from the alert bar. This often requires a reset of the device (hold power button for 20 seconds and then restart). This instability makes Kaiten hard to recommend without hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent full-featured mail client June 28, 2012
By JRobert
Just what I needed for the Kindle Fire. The killer feature for me is Identities aka, Personalities, or "Send As" - a list of your email addresses and associated signatures which you select from for your outgoing mail (new messages as well as replies). You only need this feature if you have more than one address or alias on the same inbox. If you have, it's a necessity that the built-in mail app lacks and Kaiten is the only Android mail client I know that supports it. Now I no longer accidentally reply to my business or club email with my personal email address.

It has a very flexible - if unusual - scheme for selecting which folders to display, which ones to poll and which ones should get pushed with IMAP IDLE for near-instant notification. The application lacks a help page or a user guide, which I needed to understand this feature, but I found the wiki guide to K-9 Mail (from which Kaiten was derived) helpful: [...]

(Find the manual at github if the link gets broken again).

It has an optional 2-pane display, useful if you have enough screen real-estate.

I can't comment on support - I haven't needed any. Once you get a handle on what's here, it works as it should. 4.5 stars (-1/2 for no doc; even a built-in link to the K-9 manual would be a good start).

Easily worth the $5. This is desktop-equivalent software -- no corners cut for being "only a tablet". It would cost 5-10x that on a desktop/laptop.

A year later: Still using it. I tried to find an alternative app when my Android tablet updated to KitKat. Nothing else came close. I'm using Kaiten Free at the latest rev while I wait for the pro version to be updated on the Amazon store. Five bucks? A designer coffee could make me a little more productive for a few hours. Kaiten makes me a _lot_ more productive for, well, a year so far, and counting.

4.0 out of 5 stars kaiten mail app fixes e-mail problems December 10, 2012

I was having a problem with my comcast e-mail, it simply stopped loading new messages. One of the fixes for this problem dicussed on amazon help forums was to use a Kaiten app. As soon as I bought this app, the comcast e-mail began to load correctly.

1.0 out of 5 stars unread mail count still an issue July 24, 2011
Purchased for use on my HTC EVO. This app has the same issue as the K9 app. The unread mail count continues to refresh where messages already read are again marked as unread, over and over again. Had I known this was not resolved I would have stayed with K9 for free. Now I am out 5 bucks, I don't see any other functionality that justifies buying this when you can get K9 for free. Also, I contacted the developer about this issue weeks ago and he has not responded to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars so-so December 30, 2011
After a number of issues with the Gmail app and the Android email app, I began trying everything else. I really liked this app at first, but am growing weary of a few things. First, the constant false message counts. Every time I open the app, I have a different number show up. When I open the account there are no mails. Also, I have now seen masses of deleted mails reappear. It's not as easy to see as some of the other apps. Something about it makes it difficult, but that's personal with me. Last, when I send mails, I send a lot to undisclosed recipient, and use BCC. When I put contacts in the BCC, contacts open for me to chose. But, after everyone I choose, the contacts close. Then when I choose the next, contacts opens again at the "A", to start over and scroll through. Would be very nice if contacts stayed open and let you check each one I want. Five bucks is dirt cheap, especially since someone is working their butt off to make this thing. And I won't "scream" at the developers like some reviewers do. But I may write off the five as a donation and try something else.

Emailed developer regarding the Amazon version being 3 builds behind now. He blamed Amazon. This stinks...for a 5 dollar app, I expect better support than this. I'll amend my review if and when we start to get timely updates instead of being treated like step-children (and first adopters, since Amazon carried Kaiten first).

*EDIT* 5-24-11
Naturally, right after I left this review, Amazon posted the latest build (finally). In the meantime, the developer and I corresponded over email, and he has been terrific. I sincerely believe that he is at the mercy of Amazon for them reviewing the updates and getting them posted...so for that, he is off the hook with me. The updates that have been made are terrific, and once again, this mail client is the best available for Android (tablets in particular for me). The UI is clean, the split pane helpful, and the stability much improved. I expect only greater things to come from Kaiten Mail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Email App!
This product is the best for email in Kindle Fire HD. You can delete more than one email at a time and without it you can not. Works very good with no advertisements.

Too bad I bought it and was jazzed by the ui. It does not work with exchange. You can dig on the web or fish around and find this out. Too bad I own it now.

This is a reasonably good mail program, though I found the options take some digging to find them all.
