At first I was skeptical about purchasing this journal. I cannot attest to the quality of the marker pen since I am giving this as a gift this Christmas. However, I can comment on the quality of the journal.
The journal roughly measures 10.5" by 8". The journal comes in a plastic cover which has sticker labels on it. However, these are easily removable (I successfully removed one) so you can keep the cover as protection for your journal. As the description says, the journal is embossed with the pattern depicted in the picture. The cover also looks better in person. I also liked the spine, which is red book fabric instead of a weaker paper spine. The spine is also stamped with SMASH*, but I don't really mind it. The journal is spiral bound instead of a traditional journal bound with thread or paste.
The sheets within are absolutely gorgeous and durable! I tried to take a few shots of my favorite sheets inside, but my built-in camera is terrible quality. There are various patterns and little survey like things with "Top 10" lists and "This or That." At the very back, there is also a pocket folder where you can put little tidbits you need to add to your smash folio later. It's a fabulous do-as-you-go scrapbook! I would highly recommend it. It makes a lovely gift!

I wasn't really expecting to like the Smash books; I'd heard good things but I was pretty dubious. I'd never been a scrapbook kind of person, I'm more of a journaller. But as I realised the pockets in the backs of my moleskins were getting overcrowded with ticket stubs and flyers and random crap I wanted to find a way to preserve that paraphernalia without overstuffing my journals. Luckily an arts and crafts blog I read mentioned the books and I figured, for the low prices I could find on Amazon, why not give it a go?
I'm pretty much now obsessed with my Smash book. I had recently returned from a road trip and I was able to "smash" all the junk and menus and brochures I'd received right into the first couple pages of my book, and it's been go-go from there. The pages themselves are beautiful and sometimes I'm loath to cover them up with junk, but they provide excellent instant framing for all the stuff I'm gluing in. The paper is thicker than regular journal paper, making it better for gluing and crafting. The binding is heavy duty and mine has already gone through some heavy beatings (including getting szechuan eggplant on the cover) but it still looks great, albeit with more character! ;D
My only beef with the Smash book is that the glue isn't as quick drying as I would like. Once things are dry they stick great but before that sometimes they fall out. Maybe I'm not pressing down hard enough or something.
Can't wait to get more and keep going.

I am very picky about the size and binding of any book I hope to use as an art journal. Usually, I go with Moleskine watercolor books because I know the paper is high enough quality to hold onto all of my journal fodder. However, I'm only ten pages into my first smash book and already eyeing a second - I am in love with these.
The paper is high quality and just about every page has a different design. Some designs are more interactive (spaces intended for you to jot down what you saw, heard, or are thinking), some are patterns meant to be a background for your work, and others are just almost too cool to use.
I haven't had a single pen bleed through a page, not even when repeatedly sketching lines out. I have not used watercolor on any of the pages (they're awesome enough without, seriously), so I cannot say how they'd hold up to that though.
The binding is great. I don't typically go for spiral bound because that can get in the way, but it's been a non-issue so far. You can't bend the book backwards like you would with most spiral bounds, but I think that will help it keep it's shape better.
Because the whole idea behind the smash book is that you'll glue down tons of memorabilia, the book is actually made to handle it without getting too much bulkier. I have had notebooks in the past that went from flat to fat, but this book is made with room for you to fatten it up.
The smash stick that comes with it is great as well. I kind of didn't want to use it at first because I feared wasting it, but the whole point is to use it. The pen writes smoothly and is similar to a sharpie pen in the fact that it's bold without being huge and doesn't bleed through paper. The glue stick is obviously smaller than the usual glue stick, but is holding up really well.
