Unique First Novel,
This review is from: A.K.A. Dorothy Drab (Paperback)
Bert Rinehart's look at the life of a man whose wife left him for a career in the porno industry is one of the funniest books I've read in some time. The narrator's wry view of things alternates between hilarious, pensive, and touching. There are some classic lines here, especially the description of a woman who always calls when he is at his lowest points, and his social commentary of how well-dressed, well-spoken Southerners lose several I.Q. points around Northerners. The trip to the professional wrestling show is a riot, and the way the narrator's family dotes over his brother who flipped out after college is hilarious. The chapters are vignettes, sometimes complete in themselves. I would have liked to see more detail in some instances, this being such a short book while so many works that pale in comparison go on for hundreds of pages. Some characters and scenes that were glossed over in a few short sentences could have been fleshed out. Still, a work must be judged for what it is and not for what it might have been. The author's use of the comma and his use of dashes for dialogue instead of quotes sometimes stalled me, but once I got into the story I couldn't stop reading. The way the narrator falls in love with his ex-wife every time he sees her is something we all can hopefully relate to.

This book really made me laugh out loud in places. It's the kind of book you come across everyday.
