Product Description

Kasper and Richter made the Alpin PRO Sighting Map Compass with a flip-up prism optic, so you can either use this compass like a standard baseplate with a two-degree resolution rotating bezel, or you can flip up and take a direct bearing reading off of the internal compass card with one-degree resolution and half-degree accuracy. The thermo-elastic capsule flexes so it won't accumulate bubbles when the temperature changes or develop hairline cracks if you accidentally drop the Alpin PRO Compass. Use the clinometer on the reverse side to figure out slope degrees when you're ski touring. *Nylon carry case included.

I've been primarily using the cammenga lensatic for 10 years along with Suunto Global and Silva Ranger Sighting compasses on a limited basis. I was looking for a modern sighting compass so that I could get fine bearings similar to the cammenga lensatic but in a modern/lighter package such as the silva and suunto sighting models. Additionally, I find it hard to manipulate the mirror on the suunto or silva model of sighting compass when I'm shooting a bearing.....I just prefer the Cammenga Lensatic method of sighting a bearing and reading it off the face of the compass using the prism. So...When I found the K&R Alpine, I was happy to find a Prismatic sighting compass that had the features of a base plate compass.

Unfortunately, the day the compass arrived, I was grossly disappointed when I took it out of the box:

1)The little black piece that holds the prism as shown in the picture is held in place by a piece of clear plastic that is screwed into the base plate of the compass using two VERY TINY Screws. When I received this compass, these screws were lose, the plastic piece holding the prism was not fully secured to the base plate of the compass, and one of the screw threads on the plastic piece was completely stripped. Additionally, once I flipped the prism over so that I could test it to try and read a bearing, I was unable to do so. No matter how I manipulated it, it was difficult for me to get a reading...The numbers where in a mirror image and pretty blurry.

2)This whole setup seems AD HOC on the part of K&R to fit a niche in the compass market for those that want a prismatic/optical sighting compass.
