5.0 out of 5 stars Charges Apple products, does what it claims, well made November 22, 2011

I ordered the K-Tor Pocket Socket after being without power for three days (snow storm) and finding out that my Eton crank radio could not charge our iPhones (thanks A LOT Apple!! Not supported!!). The item was shipped the same day I ordered it and arrived considerably before I expected it and in good shape. The item is well made and it does what it claims to do. I tested it on my iPod 4G; have not on my iPhone 3G yet but see no reason it should not charge that also. Be aware that there is some serious resistance when turning this crank. I found the crank turns quite easily when you start but resistance is felt as soon as the charging process begins. It is not like turning the crank on an Eton radio and you will tire out more quickly than cranking a "doomsday radio". You will want to turn at a consistent rate rather than try charge your device quickly. All in all, a good product and a great feeling to buy something made in America again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works very well - with some limitations. January 29, 2012

We got two of these generators for use for demonstrations in science classes. We tried running all sorts of things with them, and found very odd results. We could run certain things very well, but not other things. And then we figured out why: The plug on the device LOOKS like a standard outlet, but it provides electricity that is VERY DIFFERENT than what comes out of the wall. It's DC, not AC. Some devices work very well with DC, others... not so much.

Most people will use this to run phone chargers. For this purpose, it will be just fine, as long as you have a phone (and a charger) that is relatively modern.

So: Great device, but it does have some limitations.

5.0 out of 5 stars a better crank dynamo January 4, 2013
By DW
American build quality. It feels solidly built. Heavy duty plastic greased gears inside.

It generates 120 volt DC, not AC. Only works with usb chargers and some aa battery chargers. it cannot charge a netbook computer. it can charge an android tablet, also smartphones. not able to power 13w compact flourescent bulbs. it can dimly light a standard incandecent bulb.

After rotating crank, a 120 volt charge remains stored at the outlet. don't touch prongs of cord partially inserted. it can shock. it has a mini dynamo, like vcr head motor. this charge is stored in capacitor up to 12 volts then boosted up to 120 volt DC and stored in the outlet terminal capacitor.

Best charging method is go faster until no more drag and easier cranking. otherwise slow cranking causes undervoltage to ouput device.

It is noisy cranking.
