5.0 out of 5 stars A simple, yet very helpful item
For as long as people have been putting a finish on wood, people have been frustrated by either smudging their work by setting it down or having to wait until one side dries before adding a coat to the other. Now that these little babies are on the market you can eliminate both concerns.

These sound like a good ideal as one is always looking for a way to speed up the painting process, but as usual the devil is always in the details. And in this case it is te details that do count.

1. No matter how careful one is these items do mare even hardwoods, so expect to sand and repair.

2. When you flip that wet coat over it is almost impossible not to scratch the wet side, so paint the non-viewing side first.

3. At best this system requires a level bench as all 4 points must be contact, that also means the wood can have no warp as even a 1/16 gap on one one pyramid will cause dents on each brush stroke.

4. Second coating over a tack first coat cannot be done as the drag is enough to cause the part to move on all 4 pyramids which creates scratchs on the previous flipped wet coat.

I recommend no one should buy these thinking that one can do finish work, they may be ok for pickets on a fence or siding or decking but not finish work.

For as long as people have been putting a finish on wood, people have been frustrated by either smudging their work by setting it down or having to wait until one side dries before adding a coat to the other. Now that these little babies are on the market you can eliminate both concerns.

Made of a non-stick plastic, they hardly ever adhere to your works. If they do, they only leave a small dimple that can easily be remedied. The tips are rounded so there is no piercing or damaging of the wood when it is set on a pyramid. The holes you see in the sides not only lighten the pyramid but also give you finger holes to move or adjust the pyramid as needed.

Yes, you can make your own version of these and they will work about as well but these are well priced and will save you the hassle of making them. I have two sets that I put to use regularly so they won't just sit on your shelf collecting dust, you will use them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy! But beware of softer woods, September 5, 2010

This are really handy. I definitely liked them better than using scraps of wood, and because they have such a small surface area you could definitely use them on a freshly painted side of the piece. My only problem is that the points are so sharp, they will very likely mar a soft piece of wood if it is heavy enough. Make sure you use a lot of them to spread the load and reduce denting the wood.

3.0 out of 5 stars Leaves marks in softwoods, January 14, 2010

These pyramids are very convenient to use, but have some drawbacks. I was using them while applying a wipe-on finish to some vertical grain douglas fir boards. The pyramids would sometimes slip out of position. The addition of some grippy material to the pyramid feet would solve this problem. The other problem I had was that the points of the pyramid would leave dimples in the softwood. This was probably due to the slight pressure I exerted when wiping on the finish with a rag.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gets the job done, April 22, 2010

For the cost, these items work great. They do leave a tiny spot for each pyramid on the wet side, but all you have to do is rub that out with your fingernail right before you put the next coat on. No doubt they cut painting time in half for the project I did which involved large, heavy softwood (cedar) boards. Also note they will not work unless you follow the directions and DON'T paint the sides!

These are great for those paint projects where you can't wait for one side to dry before painting the opposite side. My only complaint would be that it takes a light touch with a paint brush to keep from moving the piece you are applying the finish to. If you are using a spray gun, no problem.

Does just what it is designed to do. Can be screwed down through the holes provided. I tried it with lighter items, 40lbs and less. Worked great. With the heavier items the points made marks on the wood due to low surface area. Great for cabinet doors and lighter items. These work alot better than my old strips of wood that would stick if the paint wasn't 100% dry.

I'm not sure what everyone's raving about with these things. They do leave a mark in the wet paint. But the worst problem is that these plastic pieces don't hold the item in place while you're painting the other side. When the peice moves, these pyramids leave a huge mark. Don't bother.

I'm always looking for something to set freshly painted items on so I can paint the other side. These little pyramids work great and don't leave something that needs to be retouched. A must for anyone that likes to paint but doesn't like to wait for one side to completely dry so the other side can be painted.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, October 22, 2009

For years I have used foam blocks, leftover pieces of wood, empty jars, canned food - anything I could find to lift my paint pieces up so I could get to the edges - well, these little gems not only give the lift you need for good painting, but also allow you to flip over immediately to paint the other side instead of having to wait hours while your paint dries. Saves lots of time - they work very well. If possible, buy a few packages - they were so helpful when I recently painted all of the cabinets in my home. Love 'em!!
