Editorial Reviews

Always ahead of the curve, !K7 Records has been one of the most defiantly eclectic labels in electronic music. Whether it's house, downtempo, hip-hop, electro or minimal techno, the instantly recognizable exclamation point logo has become a symbol that represents exceptional music. The simple series number says it all: This is not just another compilation, but something special. !K7 Records' 150th release is a milestone and a celebration. More precisely, !K7150 is not only a retrospective of this legendary label's seminal artists and releases and a survey of it's current roster, but a peek into where things are headed. Early releases from cutting edge producers like Nicolette and Nick Holder are represented as are the fruits of !K7's cooperation with G-Stone Recordings, the label of Kruder & Dorfmeister. These releases from Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tosca and Peace Orchestra became some of the most highly regarded - and successful - electronic releases ever. !K7150 also features some of the greatest tracks from !K7's unmatched roster of international talent including Smith & Mighty, Ian Simmonds, A Guy Called Gerald, Herbert feat. Dani Siciliano and Rae & Christian. German producers like Shantel, Funkstörung and Terranova were also engaged, and have now advanced into the international league of electronic musicians. In the new millenium, promising new artists like Swayzak, Earl Zinger, Spacek, Mike Ladd and Ghost Cauldron have signed at !K7 and their tracks help to illustrate !K7's limitless possibilities. Whether !K7150 serves as a collection of favorites or an introduction to !K7's globe-spanning sounds, this deluxe package is sure to have music lovers everywhere singing the praises of one of the world's most adventurous record labels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Shelf, September 16, 2003

This review is from: K7150 (Bonus DVD) (Audio CD)
Since its inception in 1996 and subsequent association with G-stone records, !K7 records has garnered a reputation for turning out top-notch electronic artists regardless of their sub-genres. This compilation - the 150th release for !K7 - is a great introduction to the label, featuring artists from !K7's nine-year history.

Vocals are often the overlooked instrument of electronic music. !K7, though, retains a sense of what strong vocal delivery should sound like. Whether they come from contemporary vocalist Dani Siciliano's work with Herbert, or from legendary Motown crooner Bobby Womack's pairing with Rea & Christian, the vocals here are always top shelf.

In a pleasant surprise, some of the standout tracks on this set come from new projects. From the minimal ambience of Swayzak, to the four-on-the-floor drive of Ghost Cauldron, the future of !K7 looks as promising as its past.

Other gems include Mike Ladd's work with Terranova as well as his solo track. Ladd drops slow flow delivery that could set the tone for tomorrow's hip hop. The One-of-these-Kids-is-Not-Like-the-Others Award goes to Earl Zinger's cut "Song 2wo" , which could very well be titled, "Satan's Dancehall Reggae Jamboree"; it's that good. Shantel's "Inside" is the best track in the bunch and shouldn't be buried at the end of disc one.

Not to be forgotten, this set also includes a DVD with videos from 14 different !K7 artists. The videos are, for the most part, lo-budget and lo-fi and not as inspiring as the songs that go with them. The DVD is worth having, however, for the simple reason that you won't see these videos on MTV.
