K9 Kitchen - Your Dog's Diet: The Truth Behind The Hype (2nd Ed., 2009) by Monica Segal, AHCW

Since I couldn't find this revised edition on amazon, I purchased through dogwise (dot com). Hopefully, amazon will start carrying this title, since this is a very valuable resource for those who desire to home-prepare their dog's foods.

I have read several books on the nutrition, diet and home-preparing foods for dogs. This is by far, one of the best books on this subject, which I have stumbled upon. One of the biggest disappointments, while searching through several of these types of books, is that many will go on and on about the commercial dog food scares, how to read a commercial food label, add a lot of personal (or emotional) `fluff' to explain or somewhat try to justify why their method of feeding is better, have little research or truthful explanations and/or just give recipes with no real guidelines to follow or utilize.

If you are looking for a book that goes into great detail of `underground' research and/or `unraveling' of the manufacturing practices or methods used by commercial brands of dog food companies, you will not find this here. Monica fills up all of 9 pages (chapter 2), that goes into detail on commercial foods. It provides just enough honest information to help those who are new and/or currently feeding this type of food and wish to transition or supplement with home-prepared foods. Yet, also not too much focus where those, who are avoiding commercial foods and already have enough knowledge won't be bored to tears. There are more than plenty of books that carry out this subject to more details than you can imagine. I am quite thankful for the author's choice to not overly focus on this area.

This is probably the most useful book on feeding a homemade diet (raw or cooked). But, it is being updated in mid to late 2008, with new diets which meet the lated NRC recommendations.

Bought this book elsewhere, but wanted to leave a review. Kind of disappointing as it never addresses diets for dogs with issues - tells you to buy another book. Also, the print is ridiculously small.

I was looking for this book on amazon and luckily found the new 2nd edition being sold from one of the amazon sellers 'canine specialty service' so I did not have to buy it on dogwise. Great book - it will answer many of your questions on if you should feed your dog a raw or home cooked diet and why. It also covers various supplements and vitamins, and has recipes for raw & cooked diets - including how much to feed for different weights of dogs & an f.a.q on the diets provided. Would purchase again.

The ISBN of the newer one is 9780973094824. I haven't looked at the newer edition and wish I had read the review that implied that there is a newer edition.

Who knows what has changed? It must be critical to have written a new edition, so the discussion may be worth the used book price, but you might be taking a risk with you dog's health to use this edition.
