4.0 out of 5 stars Second Part of the Jazz Re-creation
This is the companion CD of "Kansas City: A Robert Altman Film - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" and contains some extra pieces, some of which appear in Altman's movies "Jazz '34" and "Kansas City". Hence what I have written in the review of the other CD fully applies.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality
The music, while stellar, suffers from very poor production quality. As opposed to the soundtrack which has very good sound, the musicians here seem inexplicably distant (given that the tunes were all taken from the same set of session material). Perhaps I just got a bad disc, but I wouldn't advise anyone to purchase this CD where they couldn't return it no questions...

However this CD is not as compelling and, unless one has special reasons (say, a personal preferences for a piece) it should not be bought without the first one. The interpretations and the pieces are not as great, in fact some are not included in the movie "Jazz '34". You may say it contains the "alternate" or "rejected" selections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, swingin' jazz!, July 8, 1999

All due respect, the previous reviewer *must* have gotten a bad copy of this recording. The compositions, the production values, the musicianship and raw, powerful chops of every single player on this CD make it an exhilirating must-have!

I REVIEWED THE MOVIE SOUNDTRACK AND LISTED IT AS GREAT-THIS CD, WHICH WAS SAID TO BE JUST "EXTRA" TUNES THAT JUST DIDN'T HAVE ROOM ON THE MOVIE SOUNDTRACK, IN MY VIEW IS BETTER THAN THE MOVIE SOUNDTRACK.
