Like some other reviewers wrote for similar products, this one is not a true Dolby AC-3 decoder. In one test, the inputs used are 5.1 inputs with only front L&R enabled (all others muted at source), after the decoder, all outputs have sound coming out, which shouldn't be. It's probably some old upmixing techniques being used. So if you are looking for a true Dolby AC-3 decoder, this one is not. I have looked elsewhere, and so far I haven't found one. If you are ok with some approximation of surround sound from 5.1 source, this one can get you some of the effect.

My Sony Receiver was about $700 back in 2005. It did not have a digital port. I just upgraded my tv and it ONLY had a digital out. I was a little annoyed. I considered buying a new receiver but my old one is FREAKING SO AWESOME I did not want to risk buying something I was not as happy with. I thought something like this might exist and it does. I hooked it up and it is GREAT. Saved a few hundred dollars. I would give it 5 stars but I think that would have meant it included the 6 RCA cables or a special 5.1 cable with it. But really, seriously it works and saved me money.

Item reviewed: KEEDOX® 5.1-Channel DTS/AC-3 Home Theater Audio Decoder RCA Decode DTS / Dolby AC-3 Digital Audio Source F PC PS3 Laptop HD Player DM500/DM800 There are several similar units on Amazon. This one has individual 5.1 speaker outputs via RCA jacks.

I bought this to update a 90's vintage Pioneer Elite surround component stereo system. To the basic pre-amp / amp set up I added an HD DVD. The original system was THX certified and is a 5.1 system. I added an old recycled stereo receiver to power the subwoofer and center channels. The original amps power the rear and side channels. The KEEDOX was inserted between the DVD player and stereo system. I used the coax digital input on the KEEDOX from the DVD output. The KEEDOX analog outputs are connected to the Pioneer pre-amp and receiver/amp. I am satisfied with the results. The base boost on the old receiver allows the fine tuning of the subwoofer output. The "balance" and volume adjustments allow the control of the center and sub volumes. (Note: A couple reviewers commented on the lack of a base boost option on the KEEDOX. Using the controls on the basic stereo receiver compensated for the lack of boost.) There are two amps in the Pioneer system that allow me to control the front and rear speaker volume independently.

The KEEDOX may not be to the quality standard of the Pioneer Elite, but it is adequate and does allow the DTS decoding for a true surround result, a first priority for me for video watching. I use the two of the inputs on the unit. The digital video from the DVD player for 5.1 surround sound when watching movies and the analog 2.1 stereo for MP3 driven music.

It works out of the box and does what it is supposed to do with no fuss. The only caveat is the enclosed documentation leaves a lot to be desired.

Didn't work. Optical source was an Xbox 360 outputting Dolby Digital 5.1 and nothing came through to any of the RAC outputs. Returned.
