This is a big improvement in fit over the Commuter II. It fits very similar to the other Keen sandals I have owned. The Commuter II was EXTREMELY NARROW, and I had to return them. This shoe is very stable and has a nice stiff platform when clipped in. The top strap nearest the ankle is not wide, but is comfortable, even when pulling upwards on the pedals. It is comfortable with thin cycling socks, or barefoot. If you are not being competitive, but want ventilation, as well as versatility at the end of a ride, this is the shoe for you.

I purchased these sandals two weeks before writing this review.

Wow, were these better than expected! They run on the large size. I am an 11 in other Keen footwear, but was swimming in them, so I returned them and Amazon had a pair of 10.5 in my hands two days later. I usually ride between 1,000 - 2,000 miles a year on my road bike and was growing tired of my classic road bike shoes with a narrow toe box. I just stumbled upon these (alright, somewhat of a pun) while looking at Amazon and thought I'd order them. I use them with a Shimano SPD pedal.

    Pros:

The toe box is wide, the shoe is comfortable both on and off the bike.

These sandals are very versatile in that they can be worn barefoot, or with any socks of your choice. I recently wore them with a pair of thick wool socks on a 50 mile outing in 40-50 degree temps and my feet felt great. The next day I was barefoot in 80 degree weather. Both days I forgot I was biking with these on...they were that comfortable. - 5 Stars!

Quick drying. Took them out in the rain for 3 hours the other day...obviously these breathe very well since they are sandals.

The footbed is firm, without being unduly hard...plenty of support for power transfer, especially on longer rides.

No hot spots! I can't say that about previous road shoes.

No more worrying about carefully placing my cleat protruding shoe when dismounting my bike. Walk around for hours and don't be concerned with slipping.

Cons: These are minor and are not deal breakers for me.

The main ankle strap could be a bit wider to disperse the pressure on the ankle.

A little on the heavy side.

This biking sandal gets high marks for looks, comfort and durable looking materials. The problem is that the Commuter III is wider than the Commuter II, which causes problems with fit for narrow feet. I had no problem adjusting the laces over the top and front of the sandal. However, the ankle strap, which is secured by velcro, has only 2 inches of velcro. When it is tightened to achieve a snug fit it only engages about 1/2 inch of the velcro. The solution would be of Keen to extend the velcro another 1.5 inches to accomodate a greater range of ankle sizes. I have returned the size 11 and tried the 10.5 with some improvement, although now I hope that they stretch a bit since the toe touches the cap on one foot. I may have to try to sew more velcro on the strap to maintain a snug fit as I plan to use them with clips. I tried to locate a Commuter II sandal which was built narrower according to the reviews, but could not locate it in my size. I have not had any trouble with fitting into a medium width shoe in the past so I conclude that the Commuter III sandals are wider that average. My star rating would be higher but for the problems with achieving a good fit.

This is my first pair of clipless pedal shoes. Like many people have said before, I wish I'd clipless pedals on my bike years before. I feel like I can pull one or two gears higher than before, at the same level of effort, which is much better than I expected. The shoes appear to be the same good quality that you expect from Keen (I have four other non-cycling pairs). I wear 3E to a 5E width, depending on the brand and model. These fit like a 3E width.

I've only got about 100 miles on the sandals on the bike. If they hold up as expected, I'm getting another pair in 6 months, perhaps a size down to wear without socks.

Plus: comfortable enough for walking when off your bike
Con: fits like my several other Keens but would like them to feel a little snuger...they are sort of like loose fitting ski boots....too much give in them when disconnecting from pedals.

I haven't had these long so these are just initial impressions.

I have a pair of Keen Newport sandals as well that I love. I've worn them all summer for two years and they have held up great so I expect these will as well. I have found these fit about the same but they don't have the same feel. That shouldn't be surprising given that these are biking sandals. They are quite a bit taller in the heel which makes them less stable than the Newports and they are stiffer as well. The tread is also less aggressive than the Newports. These won't replace my Newports, but still, they make for an OK walking sandal.

These have non-elastic laces on the bottom and a velcro strap up top. I have very narrow AA feet but these still cinch up secure enough. I was a bit worried about that as these are wider than the older Commuters, but they're fine for me. My SPD cleats (not included) were easy to install and are recessed enough to not hit when walking on hard surfaces...usually...you still need to be aware there are metal cleats down there. On the bike they are a bit soft but still stiff enough for fairly aggressive riding. Clip in and clip out works well. They are obviously not racing shoes and are clunky compared to dedicated bike shoes. But overall a great compromise.

I looked at the Nashbar Ragster II but those weren't available locally to try on and it costs you shipping if they don't fit. So when I found these at my local bike shop on sale for just twenty five bucks more than the Ragsters it was an easy decision to get them. Just not having to fuss around cutting the sole with a knife to put the cleats on probably made the price difference worth it.
