Every piece is the same. They are about 1/4 inch thick, 3/4 inch wide and 4 1/2 inches long. You build structures by simply stacking the planks. No glue, no connectors. They can be stacked upright which looks like it would be unstable as a house of cards, but even this type of structure is surprisingly stable. The simplicity is compelling. Just as it is hard to explain why something is funny, it is hard to explain why most people- both children and adults- really become captivated by KEVA Planks. It has the broadest age range appeal of any toy we have ever seen. From preschoolers to architects, each person builds at his own skill level. The maple is quite attractive just because it is maple. We happen to have a particular fondness for the natural beauty of wood and the unique grain of each piece of wood. If fact, there is a little social lesson here... Most sets contain several planks that are colored differently than most or have a unique grain pattern. Those pieces are often sought for the crowning spire on the tower special places of honor. They are remembered and treasured because of their uniqueness. So the moral of the story is... ...very good.

My husband and I bought these for Christmas for our boys, so we've just had them today, but we're so far very glad we decided to get these, and having been saying so all day. We got a good deal on them though, about $35 for 100.

Our 20 month old liked them, but wasn't that interested. Our three year old (in a month) spent nearly ALL DAY playing with them.... and, so did my husband. They both had a blast and I can see us needing more than 100 in the future (part of the reason our 20 month old didn't get much time with them, 3 year old monopolized a bit and when that happened, he moved on).

While our son couldn't do a lot of things from the book without help (which again, dad was more than willing to provide), we were amazed at what he could do on his own. Lots of fun!

Edited on March 9th- Just wanted to say that these are still a favorite, "the best money we've ever spent", according to my husband. We have since purchased another set of 100 and both boys are better able to play with them. Both love them.

Kids of all ages seem to enjoy building different things with these planks. I will watch them play for hours using their own imagination to come up with different designs. A great toy.

My 4 year old twins received these as a birthday gift. I was a bit skeptical with the plain, no-frill package and concept. But we've had the blocks over a month and they have been played with daily by our children (ages 4-11). There are basic and intricate designs included in the box. Our preschoolers like the challenge of the simple designs and our 10 year old is building towers to the ceiling. The blocks are educational and durable. We're ordering more for Christmas.
