The centre and satellite speakers all have KEFÕs stunning new 75 mm (3") Uni-Q driver Ð the smallest ever made, its 15 mm (0.6") metal dome tweeter and double neodymium magnets delivering the extended bandwidth you normally get with much larger units.

The curvy die-cast aluminium enclosures eliminate the diffractions and internal resonances that so often blur the output of conventional small speakers, so the sound is cleaner and crisper. The sound image is completed by the new slot-ported PSW1000.2 subwoofer, its 100-watt onboard power amp driving a 200mm (8") long throw down-firing bass unit. With output fully adjustable for phase, frequency and level, a ground lift to prevent hum and a cinema setting for even weightier bass punch, its attack is as forceful as it is accurate. Whether you prefer shelf mounting, optional wall brackets or floor stands with internal cable management, the installation is as discreet as can be--until you press Play, and the whole room fills with immaculate three-dimensional sound.

The sleek silver-finished KHT1005 comprises four satellites (HTS1001), a center channel speaker (HTC1001) - all closed box design - and a beautifully matched powered sub-woofer. In die-cast aluminium enclosures, the satellites and centre speaker incorporate the smallest ever (75 mm/3 inch) brand-new KEF UNI-Q array for excellent dispersion and, as the centre speaker has an identical array, perfect timbre match across all 5 channels.

Extended bandwidth is achieved through the use of a new 15 mm (0.6 inch) aluminium HF unit. Optional wall mounting brackets are available, as well as optional stands with cable management facility.

For those who never heard of KEF, KEF is reputable audio equipment company in Europe. For some reason, we always think of USA as a world!!

Coming to the point: This is their "entry-level" 5.1 speaker set. The mainstream model is KHT 2005, which is bit larger, 4 times as expansive and 1.5 times better sound!

When I bought it, I wanted silver speakers and black subwoofer since my plasma TV is silver and other A/V equipments are black. The picture showed everything was silver but I couldn't resist the price. Fortunately I got what I wished for!! Yes people, the picture is wrong. Subwoofer is black.

Now the construction:

The speakers and sub both looks solid. The speakers are made of cast aluminium and look more like a piece of art. The subwoofer does not have spikes unlike what picture shows.

Sound:

I had heard that these speakers are power hungry and need good amp to pump them. To my surprice, they are not that bad. My Deanon 1804 pumps out 55 Watt per channel and these speakers do quite loud at half the volume. For all my practical purpose (including party times) this amp-speaker combo will do just fine. Mind you, speakers are rated for 100 watt so there is a huge room for more sound out of these small buggers. Being said that about the "quantity", the sound quality itself is very good. These speakers beats the hack out of my friend's Bose Lifesyle 20. Did you know that bose never publish the specification for their speakers?!?!! The sound is clear, crisp and pleasing. The subwoofer is loud and has good punch for movies. The sub will fall short when listening to music due to lake of tightness.

Accessories:

Since this model was not successful in USA, you will be lucky if you can find any accessory for this speakers. I wanted to buy the wall mount brackets but can't get them anywhere except the dealers charge $50 a piece!! I ended up making the wall mount myself. The speakers has a removable plastic plat on the bottom which will expose three holes. The center hold is threaded and other two are not. I used 1"x4" pine wood to make the L-shaped wall mount. Painted matching metalic silver.

These speakers are hanging on the wall in my master bedroom along with a 37" Sharp LCD, which matches these in finish to a "T". I have them matched to a JVC receiver/dvd which produces 100 watts per channel. I am perfectly happy with the satellites but the subwoofer is a little boomy and over-powering (set sub switch to "music"), otherwise I might have considered rating this system a 5. Satellites seem to be quality built with aluminium housings and have a very clean tight response. They may not be the system for a large room but work great in a bedroom and will handle plenty of power to be "too loud" for small to moderate size rooms. I made my wall brackets out of 3" L brackets and sprayed them with aluminium paint.

These little speakers are great. Very clean and clear sounding. The sub has plenty of kick. I have not used them for movies yet, but for music, they sound great. Highly recommended.
