Sierra Hotel,

This review is from: KILO SIERRA (Paperback)
A great read!
The author weaves an action packed yarn around aircraft carrier operations during the final stages of the Vietnam War. He accurately portrays and describes the physical and emotional environment of Navy carrier based squadron personnel at war and play. His description of aerial combat and carrier flight operations may cause palms to sweat. His stories of the time spent relaxing ashore in the Philippines, Hong Kong, etc., may bring joyous tears of remembrance to those who were there and laughter to those who weren't. His focus on the personal life of his characters, their honor, love, and sacrifice, will remind some of why they serve and lift the spirit of others. Though names are changed, it is obvious to anyone who served with the author that the deployment he writes about is the one they were on. The general events are only fictionalized versions of the real deal. I know, because I was there. The phrase, "Kilo Sierra" is an expression formed from the phonetic initials of a Navy saying. Sierra Hotel is another expression meaning "very good" (or words to that effect).

The writer's ability to combine the excitement of combat, the antics of sailors, along with the romance of a long distance relationship, makes this book appealing to any audience. I found myself setting my alarm to wake up an hour early each morning to get to the next chapter. You don't have to be in the military to fall in love with this incredible novel. Highly recommended!

Kilo Sierra by Tom Terlizzi is a great read and one of the top books I read in the last year. It captures, perfectly, what life aboard an aircraft carrier in combat is like and the author really hits home with his story of the challenges of separation from family and loved ones. Tom Terlizzi knows how to write a great story and keeps you in suspense. A book you'll want to pass on to your friends!

If you want to know what the war was like for some of us this is it. The author was there and has added some "Hollywood" to it, but in essence it is based on real events and real people!

A great Summer or rainy-day read. A group of fictional Naval Reserve attack pilots (A-7 Corsair II) face activation orders right after Desert Storm. I found the story entertaining, humerous and an easy read.
This is a NOVEL; it is FICTION! It is not intended to provide a factual account of any particular group of aviators, but it was damn funny. |
