One of Feist's better efforts,
By rainsong (New Zealand) - See all my reviews

It isn't the Riftwar saga, but it sure is better than Prince of the Blood. Prince Nicholas is far more likeable than his brothers, and in Buccaneer we get to have a look at Crydee twenty years after the war. Set thirty years after the end of the Riftwar, this book provides a set up for the Serpentwar by describing a trip to the continent of Novindus beyond the Endless Sea, after Crydee is attacked by sea. Other old characters are Ghuda and Nakor the Isalani, Amos Trask and Duke Martin. I thoroughly enjoyed King's Buccaneer, and I recommend that you read it before reading the Serpentwar Saga.

A great swashbuckling adveture. Not his best, but close,

After the first two pages of the Riftwar saga I was hooked. I quickly developed what I can only think of now as an obsession and finished the four book saga in week. The first two books were by far the best. I was engrossed by the magnificent idea of a boy forced to become a magician who despite his apprehensions becomes one of the greatest magicians the world(that is the fantasy world) has ever known. The saga is a must for all fantasy fans.I was thirsty for more and so I decided to read Feist's next book Prince of the Blood. It was horrible. No it was worse then horrible it was so bad I wanted to burn it (for those of you who are appalled and rightly so fear not the feeling only lasted for a short time I would of course never actually burn a book no matter how bad it was) A month later I decided Magician was good enough that I would give Feist another try despite Prince of the Blood, so I purchased The King's Buccaneer. I loved It. I couldn't put it down. I feigned sickness so I could stay home and read. If you are a fantasy fan you have to read this book and if you are not a fantasy fan read this book anyway. While it is not quite as good as Magician it is close. So read the Riftwar Saga and love it. Then skip the Prince of Blood and don't give it a second thought not even for a milisecond. But whatever you do don't miss this great adventure.

The King's Buccaneer,

The King's Buccaneer was simply a great book. It was the best one that I have read that was wrote by Raymond Feist, and that is saying alot. All I wanted to do was to finish the book, everytime I got a free minute I was reading this book. If you are looking for a good series of books to read I would definently recommend the Rift War saga. It was a great series and I loved all of the books that I have read so far.

I loved the RIFTWAR SAGA; it was in my top ten of the hundreds of fantasy novels that I've read in my lifetime. And, although this was better than PRINCE OF BLOOD, which I wanted to smash on my wall, somethig is lacking in emotional resonance. True, the crippled boy was an interesting point and more interesting than the others, but seeing all the old characters felt hollow. I think this is an okay read but I can think of some 30 to 40 fantasy novels alone that are better. George R.R. Martin's A GAME OF THRONES, for instance, and THE LEGEND OF HUMA or NINE PRINCES IN AMBER or ELFSTONES OF SHANNARA.

Some of Feist's best work,

The beginning of the story moved too quickly, giving little character detail. This made the horrors of a raid on the village seem like a faceless story. Much like a news clipping of one we know nothing of, so the emotions are not as likely to be there. The characters became more colorful once they were on a mission, then the book became hard to put down. The depth of many of the characters was very interesting from this point, specially some of the lesser ones. I could have done without the pirate captain stereotype. Still there were some new and interesting characters, mainly the "rogue and trickster" types. They were interesting and had new angles to their personalities, not borrowing from past stories, or movies, etc.

I really enjoyed this book. Feist did a great job with this one. It's not my faveorite of his, but I definently recommend it to anyone who is a Sci-fi fantasy fan. I made the mistake of reading the Serpentwar Saga before I read The Kings Buccaneer so don't make the same mistake. I recommend reading all of Feists books in order. A truely excellent book. I also recommend Prince of the Blood, another of Feist's masterpieces.

An must-read for Riftwar fans,
By Kelly A. Ohlert "Grace under fire" (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The King's Buccaneer (Paperback)
A continuation of the world developed in the Riftwar Saga, Feist uses this book to tell the tale of the young prince Nicholas, third in line for the rown of Krondor. Before he can rule as a noble of the Realm, Nicholas must first overcome his own inner demons in the form of a lame foot and the pressure of being the youngest son.An excellent read in keeping with Feist's masterful world of high fantasy!

It's okay, not the best fantacy book i've read.,
This review is from: The King's Buccaneer (Paperback)
The book isn't too badly written. It's just that it didn't strike me as being particully new. The characters overall seemed very stock stand and little about them to make jump out at me as being new and exciting. There are some really good parts to the book and it isn't a bad read. But it had alot of potential to be alot more than it is. A pity as E. Feist isn't a bad author at all.

Having read the magician books and the riftwar saga, I decided to check out Feist's Prince of Blood and then the King's Buccaneer. They were both exceptional in my opinion; some of my favorite Feist books so far. Buccaneer stands alone very well, and I think it would make a great read even if you're totally new to Feist's work. Of course lots of the characters have been around a while in other Feist books, but the story really revolves around a newer character from the Feist world (not sure how many books after this one he plays a major part in though). It's a satisfying, fast-paced story about a young prince coming into adulthood. And while some aspects of the main (and other) character's growth seemed a little bit contrived (i.e. it seemed a little like the prince transformed suddenly from a shy boy unsure of himself, to a confident, capable adult overnight), they were all fleshed out well enough that you genuinely cared about them early into the story. If you've enjoyed any of Feist's books in the past, you'll probably enjoy this book. You'll probably like it even if you're unfamiliar with Feist or his characters; especially if you like fantasy/quest/sea-voyage types of stories.

I ended the book last night and while I read the last lines of the book, the entire story came back to me, and I noticed a tear from my eyes. Now I'm nineteen years old and I read only fantasy and I can only admit that together with "lord of the rings" this is the only book I feld horrible. Because something happened, and the reader simpely doesn't want this to happen. I read the books in dutch, cause I started the magician in dutch and I automaticly read the rest in dutch. I'm gonna start on "shadow of a dark queen" today. And I can advice everyone who like's fantasy and hasn't read feist yet, go read him! for he is the best. cause he write's with magic, or maybe it's just a little trick. Nakur.
