An assortment of delectable confections,
By
This review is from: KIRKLAND Signature PREMIUM CHOCOLATES of the WORLD ASSORTMENT JAR NET WT 2 Lb (907 g) (From Italy Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Canada and Belgium) (Misc.)
I found these chocolates at Cosco, and they were selling for $10. So I bought a jar of them to hand out to a class of kids. When I got home, I tried one, and my tastebuds were instantly lavished with a sense of luxuriance. As I indulged on all nine of the assortment's palatial flavors, I languished over the thought that such delights would only be ingested lackadaisically by the likes of children, who would care not for the intricacies of their opulent sapor; so I ate them all myself.

Content:Bouchard L'escaut Belgian Chocolate (Blue wrapper, cube shaped): This was a very good, standard milk chocolate truffle. The ganache is way better than Godiva's (I find Godiva's milk and dark chocolate ganache a little slimy and runny, as opposed to their praline and extra dark truffles, which seem to have a more firm ganache). Bouchard's ganache is firm, staying in shape at warm indoor temps without crumbling, yet smooth and creamy, like a good truffle. The taste is very pleasant, standard Belgian chocolate taste. 9/10 Witor's Noir (Black and copper wrapper). This was the best in the bunch. The ganache... oh, my what perfect, beautiful, heavenly ganache! This is the ganache I long for and search for when I visit chocolatiers during travel, but never find! The only other truffle I'd ever had so close to perfection has been my aunt's homemade truffles, which she does not sell (and which are 100x better than Godiva's). There was bit of 'chocolate nibs', or small cookie-crumb-like chunks sprinkled on the top of the ganache before being molded in chocolate. Although I am ordinarily not a fan of crunch texture inside truffles, the slight crunch was overshadowed by the unbelievable ganache (as with the other truffles with crunch in this mix as well). 10/10 Gudrun Belgian Chocolate (red round wrapper): Standard extra dark truffle, and a pretty good one at that! Not quite as good as Godiva's extra dark, but for the price, I can think of none better. Because the chocolate is so dark, the inner ganache is very thick, almost hard with a very slight crumble. If let out at a higher room temperature, it probably would soften. The flavor of the chocolate itself is rich and strong. A very nice truffle, but one better to melt on the tongue instead of chew due to the dryness typical of extra dark ganache. 8.5/10 Bombones (bell shaped black wrapper with gold stripes): This is a creme rather than a chocolate ganache filled truffle. Cremes are usually the type I bite into by accident then throw away because I really dislike them, but this one was not too bad. I can't identify the flavor of the cream, or describe it well, but can say it is not really vanilla, nor is it too sugary. It is smooth and soft, and has a slight caramel aftertaste. 6/10 Stellini (silver wrapper with green ivy): This was another creme that took me by surprise. Like Bombones, it was better than any creme I'd ever had out of a chocolate assortment box. The taste of the creme was vanilla, but not overly strong, nor too sweet. It was very good, for a creme. 6/10 Bacio (silver wrapper with blue stars): This was one of the best ones in the container. It is a hazelnut truffle, and tastes almost exactly like Godiva's praline truffles (also my fave by Godiva). The execution is slightly different: In this Bacio truffle, chopped nuts are mixed in with the delicious, perfect ganache, then topped with a whole hazelnut, then molded in chocolate. Very, very good! 9.5/10 Zahor caramels (Gold wrapper, bar shaped): Very good caramel! It tasted reminiscent of a Caramello bar, which is great for me! Some people like hard or chewy caramel, but I much prefer the half liquid/runny type (it's easier on the teeth and easier to savor). The caramel was mild and pleasant, and the milk chocolate coating was very sweet. Although I don't think this chocolate is a British chocolate, the sweetness surely tasted similar to a UK-type chocolate. 9/10 Zahor Cocoa Nibs (Large, emerald green wrapper). Wow, what a decadent chocolate! This is a dark chocolate truffle with a medium dark ganache. What another wonderful ganache, very close to perfect (and similar to the texture of godiva's extra dark or praline ganache). The only drawback is that there are 'nibs' mixed in with the ganache, and I usually don't care for crunch in ganache. However, the taste was so overwhelmingly amazing, the nibs did not deter its edibility one bit. The chocolate used to dip the ganache was powerful and flavorful. Absolutely wonderful! 10/10 Truffini D'Erable (silver and black wrapper). This is the Canadian maple chocolate, and the one I tried last, because I abhor maple in most all forms. I was very surprised at how mild the taste of the maple was- much more mild than the smell. In fact, I could barely taste the maple at all, both while it melted, and during the aftertaste. It was very good, much to my surprise! The texture of the ganache was firm yet smoothe, much like that of the Bouchard milk and Bacio ganaches. The chocolate in which it is molded is matte rather than shiny, and also softer than all the other chocolates. 7/10 Brockmann's Truffini Peanut (brown & black wrapper with gold stripes): Pretty good peanut butter bon bon. The peanut filling was very mild- a common trait of all the flavored innards in this assortment. It was not too sweet, nor overly peanut flavored. I prefer a stronger peanut taste. The chocolate coating was standard milk chocolate if only slightly less in quality compared with the other truffles. Tastes like homemade peanut butter cups. 7/10 Remarks: The distribution of each type in the jar was very unequal, which is always frustrating when buying bulk chocolate assortments in which you have a couple favorites. In the jar I received there were 13 Red Gudrun truffle, only 4 of the delicious Bacio Hazelnut truffles, 5 Bombone cremes, 10 Stellini cremes, only 4 of the delicious Zahor cocoa nibs, 9 Canadian Maple truffles, 9 Zahor Caramel chocolates, thankfully 10 Witor Noir dark toffee truffles, only 4 blue Bouchard Milk chocolate truffles, and only 4 Brachmann peanut butter bon bons. So, it was a small sprinkling of the really good ones among many of what I consider the mediocre flavors (typical of bulk chocolate). However, even the 'worst' of the bunch are not ones that will go to waste, which says a lot, since I usually end up throwing at least 2 or 3 chocolates away, even in a Godiva assortment box. The jar is large at 2 pounds of chocolate; It will fill 2 candy dishes twice over. The chocolates I received were fresh; there was no white stuff or graying at all, as some other reviewers have shared. These were delivered to Southern California, so it's possible freezing temperatures could have compromised orders to other areas due to no fault of the product itself. The expiration date on my jar is for 6 months from now, which is pretty good for Amazon, who have had expiration problems with food products in the past. These would make a great gift if they were to be removed from their jar and put in a decorative basket or tin; The big, ghetto Kirkland sticker is a little off-putting for a gift, and was actually the reason I waited so long to buy it in the first place. I'm glad I did, and you might want to try it, too!

This is a really big jug of chocolates!
We distributed them into at least half a dozen Christmas gift baskets and still had a few leftover to sample! All of the chocolates we tried were lovely, fresh, and of very high quality. The wrappers were beautiful, shiny foil in shades of blue, green, red, silver, and gold. The only down side is that some are not labeled at all, and some have very minimal labeling. It would be nice if the package included a "key" of some sort, and if you're buying for a picky eater or someone with food allergies, this could be a risky pick. The flavors we tasted were all subtle and delicious, though, and included: -very dark chocolate with light, crispy chocolate nibs -a smooth, lighter chocolate with a creamy hazelnut filling -a maple chocolate - better than you would think, without an overpowering maple flavor -a creamy, chocolate-covered caramel -a smooth, mild peanut butter truffle All in all, there were about 70 large-sized, beautifully wrapped candies, and not a single one we didn't like. They are an amazing treat, as long as you don't mind the surprise of not knowing which flavor you might unwrap!
