This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of KISS` debut album: KISS. The band is celebrating the occasion in myriad ways, one of which is by releasing the 40-track compilation KISS 40. This set includes one track from every major album release (i.e., studio, Alive and compilations), as well as three live selections from the 2000-era and an unreleased demo from 1977.

I love that this collection has 40 tracks and that there's one from each album. This great concept is one many hardcore KISS fans would like to see the band apply to its live setlist (i.e., a 20-song set with one track from each of the band's 20 studio albums).

The audio quality of the tracks is superb. While I don't believe anything has been newly remastered, all of the tracks are crisp and clear.

While there's only one unreleased studio track on the album, I'm glad the 2000-era live tracks are on here. Three of them are from soundboard recordings during tours with the current lineup (i.e., Rock The Nation, Alive 35 and Sonic Boom Over Europe). We've all heard the studio recordings of these songs a million times, so having commercially unreleased live versions helps freshen them up.

My only gripe with KISS 40 is some of the songs included on the album are questionable. Is "Down On Your Knees" really the best song off Killers? Of course not. Many fans, including myself, would argue that "Nowhere To Run" blows it away. How about "Hold Me, Touch Me" from Paul's solo album? It's a great song but should it be on here instead of "Tonight You Belong To Me"? And why is Paul's demo of "God Of Thunder" on here instead of the iconic version by Gene? Also, because KISS 40 adheres to the one-track-per-album rule, certain KISS classics aren't included, such as "Calling Dr.

I gave an extra star to hopefully send a message. More unreleased demos more stars, one unreleased demo one extra star. In other words IT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Too many cases of re-re-re-releasing the same material to make a buck. There's nothing wrong with putting out some compilations but there's a limit. Kiss is still an active band & rivaling inactive artists like Hendrix when it comes to putting out already released material in new packaging. Take a note from how other bands like Motorhead are treating their fans, with more respect.

It would be nice if you guys would let Tommy & Eric play in their own style too btw. If I want to hear Ace I'll listen to Ace. Maybe that's too much to ask for? I'm sure those two have more to offer than just imitating the original members.

Just another greatest hits release from KISS, but it's still pretty cool. 40 tracks, one studio track from each album, live cuts and a few unreleased songs are included. I'm not going to discuss the track listing because as a KISS fan (and even as a non-fan) you are probably familiar with most of the songs, at least from the 70s era. The album is a nice retrospective of their 40+ year career.

If you are going to purchase the physical CD release, I must say that the booklet for the CD is one of the best produced I've ever seen. The color is amazing and the pages are glossy. Great quality packaging. It includes some cool images from the band's career. It definitely adds to the quality of the item. If that's your thing.

so this makes what, the 20th "Best of" by Kiss, same stuff over and over and over. I say take a chance and throw in some very under appreciated gems like Gene's killer "Charisma" throw in some more Ace, throw in some more Peter. Throw in "Tonight you belong to me" Throw in "Living in sin" or "True confessions" by Gene, throw in "I'm gonna love you" by Peter. I mean come on! Its the same song list on ALL "Best of's" over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...

This collection is NOT a hits collection as much as it is a career retrospective. 40 tracks concisely compiled on 2 CDs; there is at least one track included from every single Mercury release by KISS as well as a track each from Sonic Boom and Monster (the two albums released on other record labels). Even a selection from each live album and each hits collection that included new studio tracks. And with the leftover recording time on each disc, the added a few unreleased demos and live tracks from different eras.

First things first...No Love Gun?? I know its a redundant HITS song but it is a must have as one of their "staple" songs. You cant do a HITS cd without it. However, the rest of the cd is pretty good. It features at least one song from every studio album and some live and demo tunes as well. My favorite is Pauls version of God Of Thunder (Paul wrote the original version and planned on singing it). I would actually like to see Paul re-record this one for his next solo cd. Its pretty different from the Destroyer version. Pretty good collection here minus Love Gun.

Hardcore fans will need this for the inclusion of the unreleased demo "Reputation" and some live tracks from recent tours. Casual fans would be better off buying the single disc "The Very Best Of KISS" or "KISS Gold." This compilation includes things like the demo version of "God Of Thunder" with Paul Stanley on vocals in place of the album version that features Gene Simmons on lead vocals. Decent overview of their career, but not as comprehensive as it should be for newer fans.

Is this a joke?
The label puts together these packages. Not the band.

Don't forget the rare import "In Your Face" by Ace. When "Psycho Circus" came out in 1998, I ordered the 3-d VCR tape of it from Amazon. The package included: the VCR tape, a pair of 3-d glasses, and a CD. The VCR tape had two 3-d videos on it. The CD had 2 songs on it -... Read More

well
It's pretty much their own label at this point. Paul and Gene call the shots. This is the LP they will be pushing out this year with Leppard. Nothing more than that. Another Greatest Tracks type of CD, no big deal. It could be the last KISS release we will ever see, it's just like Double Platinum... Read More

How did they snub their fans at the RRHOF? They were asked to perform as the original 4some, with NO consideration for allowing Eric & Tommy to play. I understand some don't like that they refused to play BUT I can't say I blame them. Other bands were inducted and allowed to perform with lineups... Read More

Kiss "40" CD booklet/liner notes - what's in it?
The booklet is nice and shiny and pics of most of the members through 40 years.
