4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and intermediate fishing of all types...saltwater, and freshwater
I have been surf fishing for a few years, casually,... A buddy of mine bought a 28' Pursuit for fishing in Boca, this helped get me to the point where we had some direction without having to guess too much on what we needed and how to use it...Only wish I had this book before getting into surf fishing, i might have made a bigger splash with my wife in the respect vs fish...

This guide is just not informative enough. While including less information does keep it simple in a sense, it is not the sense I am interested in. The advice of the book can be summarized as follows
1) Go to your local tackle shop (a small place not a big store).
2) Ask the guy working there: where to fish and what to fish for and with what to fish...

Author has good writing style with sense of humor. I would read more Roth books if there are more.

A MUST for the angler of all levels.
Everyone needs to be reminded of the basics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helped this novice angler, March 6, 2007

I am a novice angler and found this book to be very helpful. If you have ever gone to the fishing section of a sporting goods store and found the vast array of line, lures, rods and reels to be overwhelmingly daunting, this book will be your friend. I like that the author has a sense of humor and that everything gets broken down into basic elements. Photos and diagrams are also quite good. I will look to other books in the KISS series as the need arises.
Only four stars because I think this book would benefit from some info on what to do with your catch after it is caught, i.e. cleaning and cooking.

This guide is just not informative enough. While including less information does keep it simple in a sense, it is not the sense I am interested in. The advice of the book can be summarized as follows
1) Go to your local tackle shop (a small place not a big store).
2) Ask the guy working there: where to fish and what to fish for and with what to fish.
3) Buy a spinning rod and reel and put mono line on it.
4) Go fishing.
I did learn some things about fishing from this book, for instance it has a whole chapter on chumming. The knot diagrams are quite clear.

All in all, I thought a 300 page book could (and should) be quite a bit more informative than this book.
