KISS: THE SECOND COMING Is One Of The Best KISS Documentarys,
By Tom Patrick (Lexington, Ky) - See all my reviews
This review is from: KISS - The Second Coming (DVD)
KISS The Second Coming is the perfect video of die-hard KISS fans, and I enjoyed it too much. It's a backstage pass into the hidden world of KISS that everybody doesn't get the chance to see. We follow four men (Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley) as form a rock group, travel into good times, and crash into the bad times. But in the end, they reunite and start a World Alive Tour, and release new albums.

An excellent documentary lacking only in concert footage!,
This review is from: KISS - The Second Coming (DVD)
This is a documentary about the reunion of the hottest band in the world! After a brief review of what Kiss had done prior to their reunion, it starts with Peter Criss rejoining the band for a song at a convention. Then it leads to the Unplugged concert with both Peter and Ace Frehley joining the band and continues to follow KISS through out their re-union tour. It ends with promotions for what will be the KISS' Psycho Circus CD. Most buyers will be disappointed with the lack of concert footage but you can get plenty of that with Kissology Volume I (1974 - 1977). If you don't have Kissology Volume I (1974 - 1977), I strongly recommend getting it first. Kissology Volume I (1974 - 1977) definitely rocks! Anyway, if you love the original KISS, this DVD is still a worth while investment. It is great seeing this documentation of Gene, Paul, Peter and Ace getting together again and the reaction of KISS fans through out the world.
Note: This DVD contains some footage that may not be appropriate for children.

Finally, a KISS video that's longer than 90 minutes!,

I've been a KISS fan for almost 16 years, I'm 24 years old now. I have all of their videos, and this is one of their best! It takes you from the first meeting of the original band(MTV Unplugged) to the band putting on the outfits and makeup at Gene's house. Talk about "behind-the-scenes" footage! I love the three extra songs that were added for the DVD! The only compliant is: They keep showing KISS rehearsing "Deuce" over and over! That got boring fast!

Ok, I will start out by saying it lacks concert footage, actually if your looking for real concert footage its not here at all, they dont play a single song in concert on this disc, you see them on stage alot doing shows, but there is not one part in the whole disc that has a complete song in concert except for the bonus features. most of the concert footage is dubbed over by the band talking about what was going on.
Ok now that we have got that out of the way lets start the disc. It starts out like a VH1 behind the music documentary which is really cool and is my favorite part of the whole thing, it goes all the way through to the break up , while the band is explaining in their own words why they chose to break up. then we start the reunion stuff, the MTV unplugged session, the Grammys it even shows Kiss present the Grammys with the late great TUPAC Shakur(RIP) then it shows them rehearsing the music, and then they start doing the photo shoots which are absolutley hilliarious, paul has a bunch of naked women in his session which is very awesome becuase you see everything the bush and all I loved it. then it basically went through the whole tour every country, showing clips from the tour on and off stage, it has the jay leno skits from the tonight show, they celebrate everyones birthday except peters for some reason, the dialouge from the band and the dialouge from the footage really show you that at one point during kiss's return that they actually were happy to be back together, but we all know the tradgic ending that was to come. it finishes off the program by, showing the photo shoot from psycho circus, the bonus feature are lacking and the shandi performance was very weak, there are three concert videos though, 1.Shout it out loud(opening night at tiger stadium) 2.shandi(not worth it to watch very boring) 3.Detroit Rock city( this is from the psycho circus tour but I dont know when or wear) good dvd if you want to see a very good short documentary on the band and then if you want to know every detail behind the scenes of the concert, it is very long and drawn out at times, but just being able to hear the whole story from kiss's perspective is worth the time. i watched it twice in one day so its very good or I'm very bored. haha ack to all the curly people out there, lets bring ace back to the kiss lineup and put tommy back to work on a full concert video like "RTN" but for psycho circus and the reunion and the farewell tour. rock on.

Yet another cash-in, but why this?,
By Steve Cunningham (Ann Arbor, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: KISS - The Second Coming (DVD)
An overly long documentary on the reunion tour of '96-'97. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Kiss fan, but this is just silly. At 122 minutes, there is precious little actual concert footage here, and no live segment lasts more than a few seconds. Unlike the early 90's "X-Treme Close Up" video which was somewhat of a documentary/narrative, this one doesn't even bother including whole songs, videos, or live performances. It's just an endless stream of Matt Pinfield's narration and the guys in the band talking about stuff that you don't really care about after 20 minutes. Diehards will probably get into it's excruciating detail, but if the band wanted a cash-in video from the tour, why this garbage and not a whole concert video? The three live "bonus" videos are a mixed bag, the "Shout It Out Loud" video you've seen a bunch of times already probably, the "Shandi" video is a one-camera amateur job with mediocre sound (although a very unique Paul solo performance) and "Detroit Rock City" from the movie premier is decent, but it's scaled down from the normal Kiss stageshow.

If you like watching what happens behind the scenes of a tour and concert, this is the video for you. The rehearsal footage alone is worth the price of the tape.IMO, this is the best video from KISS.

A must-have for Kiss fans,

What it is: A documentary of the events surrounding the original Kiss members' reunion and their resulting tour.Review in a nutshell: this is a must-have for Kiss fans and highly recommended for those discovering Kiss for the first time. Very well put together, this video starts with a short flashback to the 70s and the band's heyday. Great video, film, and still shots--both in the beginning and throughout the video--recall Kiss' early development and meteoric rise to fame. While nothing here will be news for the avid Kiss fan, it offers many rarely or never-before seen glimpses of the group and provides a great introduction for new fans--some of whom may be too young to even remember Kiss' original years. Most incredibly, the images from two decades ago, shown with those from the past couple years, prove how well Kiss has faithfully recreated their act--both musically and visually. The bulk of the video (or I should say videos--it's a two-tape set) focuses on the band's reunion and subsequent world tour. This is where the longtime Kiss fan will be most enthralled. Having been a fan since 1976, I can truly say that we could've only dreamed of seeing the stuff that makes up this video back then. Watching them clown around and interact, there is unquestionably a chemistry between these guys not rivaled since The Beatles. While the reunion tour concert footage is great, it is the behind-the-scenes pictures that make this a "must-have." To see the guys so candidly is really cool: Gene joking around in full costume on his birthday, Paul singing and playing Latin American songs in concerts south of the border, stage flubs, their antics during photo shoots, and goofing around doing the "Macarena" dance backstage in full costume. In addition, some of the best scenes show the band relearning their old songs in early reunion rehearsals. And no Kiss fan can help but enjoy watching the guys doing a stage rehearsal without makeup and wearing street clothes with their costume boots on! There is very little to criticize about this video. In fact, my only complaint would be that a couple of the most interesting clips were cut short. Case in point: we start to see Kiss' first TV appearance, from an early 1974 American Bandstand, and they quickly cut from this incredible footage to yet another shot of Kiss playing some arena somewhere sometime in 1997. I realize the point of this is the reunion tour, but the retrospective shots are sometimes too golden to be so quick. I would've also traded some of the recent concert shots for more behind-the-scenes stuff. The bottom line, though, is neither of these criticisms detract from the video's worthiness. All in all, the two-plus hours of video are well worth the money and shouldn't leave anyone unsatisfied. The production values are top-notch, it's well edited, the music is of course great, and for the most part it's not overly self-important (at least not on the Kiss scale of things). Often, you get the feeling the piece could've been done as an independent documentary. It should be noted, however, for those concerned parents out there that there is some R-rated nudity: nothing too bad, just the occasional obligatory front row female fans who like to pull up their shirts. Something to know if you plan on watching it with your 8-year-old kid. Ultimately, the video is a testimony to a group of guys who got together, put aside their past, got in shape, and put on over 200 shows and sold three million tickets in under a year. Kiss was the biggest band of the 70s and the biggest band of 1996-1997. And while some may say it's all just for money, no fan cares; Kiss gave us what we wanted and this video is no exception.

The best look at the KISS reunion,
By
This review is from: KISS - Second Coming [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I will start off my review by saying that I am a die hard KISS fan,and I love things that bring back certain memories. In this instance,if you like KISS and you love things that bring back certain memories, then you will love this video/DVD. It takes a clear look at the beloved and awesome reunion tour KISS had in 1996 that saw original guitarist Ace Frehley and original drummer Peter Criss return to the group and also saw KISS putting both their makeup and costumes back on. You will see how the reunion happened,a biography of KISS(70's,a breeze through their 80's era,and briefly into the early 90's)and it talks about their reunion tour, and you get a brief behind the scenes look at the tour, some of which includes KISS rehearsing,Gene Simmons,Paul Stanley,Ace Frehley,Peter Criss on their tour bus, clips of their concerts, and I won't give away everything, but there are also some hot women to be found in this video!!! Now this video has EVERYTHING a KISS video(and especially videos that go into discussing reunions)needs-without question. It's really a shame that Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are no longer with the group-Ace left the group to work on his new solo album, and Peter was fired. It makes me sad to see musicians that great and that talented have to go through lineup changes,ESPECIALLY after they did a reunion tour.Anyway, like I said, this serves as a good memory for all KISS fans and it is a great behind the scenes look at their reunion tour, and it is also the best KISS video available,so just get it because it is awesome and KISS rocks!

Im a big Kiss fan, but this was kinda of disapointing even to me. Kiss the second coming is a documentary of the bands 1996-97 reunion tour. Not much that was really insightful or new to die hard kiss fans, which by the way are the only people who will probably buy this anyway. An actual concert video would have been much better...nuff said. P.S. I still love em

Not worth it,
By Andrew Richmond (Irvine, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: KISS - The Second Coming (DVD)
As a 20+ year KISS fan, I was very interested to see what they had come up with for their newest DVD. After watching this two hour documentary, I was quite disappointed. The picture quality during the first hour is very poor, and the documentary rambles on with no particular theme. The band constantly displays their larger than life egos, and the numerous scenes showing footage of girls baring their breasts at concerts seems awfully tacky to show over and over again. The lack of uninterrupted concert footage, other than the three songs at the end, was disappointing. After you watch this video once, it is unlikely you will ever want to view it again.
