KKSF Sampler for AIDS relief - 19 years of great jazz, January 24, 2011
This review is from: KKSF 103.7 FM Sampler for AIDS Relief, Vol. 12 (Audio CD)
I was living in San Francisco when KKSF first came on the air. At first they were trying to focus on Brazilian jazz but later became San Francisco's favorite jazz station. Someone, I don't know who for sure, had the bright idea of taking the years top 10 to 20 jazz hits, putting them on a CD and have a major chunk of the profits go towards AIDS.
I have collected them since the first ones came out. Always guaranteed to contain lots of tracks to please. Mostly instrumental and mostly contemporary (although Dave Brubeck and Take Five showed up one year). When I moved away I still followed the radio station and kept buying the sampler, as we called it.
Sadly, last year the owners sold it to someone who thought San Francisco needed another rock and roll station and that was the end of KKSF as we knew it. I think there are 19 samplers. Some are very hard to find. You can pick almost any one and you will budget for the rest. For a while I gave them as gifts until I realized I no longer had a complete set and whoever I gave them to was long gone in my life. I recently spent a fair amount of time finding copies and bringing my set up to completeness.
Some of my favorites: Mary Black singing Columbus, Marvin Gaye "Heard it on the grapevine" come to mind right away. One of the CDs is a collection of Christmas jazz songs which doesn't quite come up to the level of the other CDs, but around the holidays it is nice to have around.
KKSF is still on the internet, it just isn't a jazz radio station anymore.
Enjoy
