this is the greatest grampa/grandaughter (4) afternoon science project ever. great sorting and visual/motor stuff, wonderful opportunity for grampa to butt out of the problem solving and only come in as a last resort. the disassembly process encourages good work habits, the assembly process rewards planning...just an absolutely cool experience, as long as grandma is available to keep the two year old out of the mix

The model that is showcased on the front of this set does not work as designed. The yellow steering wheel does not turn the car's axle; it just spins around on the blue rod (ie "steering column"). In the picture, the steering wheel looks as though it is attached firmly to the orange clip. Not. You can, of course, take the steering wheel off and just spin the blue rod itself and this _will_ turn the wheels. However, the name of this model is "Steering Wheel"(!!!) and it is the large model pictured on the front of the box! (You'd think it would work! My son is very disappointed because this car is the reason that I bought this kit.I also bought this kit because we had the K'Nex Introduction to Simple Machines: Gears kit last spring. Every model in this kit worked and it was challenging and educational. "Gears" is a good buy, but "Wheels" belongs in the garbage. This is the "Gears" kit: K'Nex Education Intro To Simple Machines - Gears - 1 98 Pieces |
