I bought this for my 8 year old son. At first he needed a little help learning how all the pieces connected (10 min) after that...he would spend hours in his room building all of the different objects (record player, egg beater, car window, ect.) Within the first week I think he had spent over 20 hours in his room working on it. It has now been 2 months and he continues to spend hours building different things with it. Each one takes him 1-2 hours and it is so cool to seem them work. He is so proud and it is a good self esteem builder. He loves it...with his allowance he has bought more k'nex. I don't think any of the pieces have broke and they seem very strong. I am very happy that I decided to buy this toy.

All of the models worked and were challenging enough to keep the interest of my 7-year-olds. Granted, not all of the models worked super-smoothly at first and the chain had to be tweaked a bit, but overall it was educational and they had fun playing with the results of their labor.

Don't, however, make the mistake of assuming that all K'Nex Education kits are as good as this one. We just bought Wheels and the showcase model of that kit does not work as pictured. K'Nex sets used to be rock-solid purchases, but now it seems to be "buyer beware" depending on which set you purchase. That being said, "Gears" is one of the good ones.

Grandma and Grandad purchased this and the 400 piece bucket set for my 7 year old daughter for Christmas. She has not stopped playing with it. These sets are a great addition / next toy for any kids who like my daughter, loves to build things.
The added bonus is this stuff is made in the USA. We don't buy things that are made in China which is an issue for kids toys, therefore so long as K'nex continues to be made in the USA we'll be buying it.

K'Nex Gears was bought for my six-year-old grandson for Christmas. He enjoys building cars with it and, five months later, is still enjoying playing. Some of the machines are still too sophisticated for him to build, but he's careful to put all the parts away in the box each time he gets it out. This toy will last and keep his interest for several more years: I plan to add additional sets to this one.

My grandson,6, is a lego nut and video game nut. He turned up his nose at this when he saw it. He took a 2nd look when his legos were finished. He liked it and played with it as long as he does his legos. When I made one of the preplanned objects, he said, cool! how did you do that? And, he ended up loving this. Very educational, thought provoking with the gears.

I've used this with 7 to 10 year old students who have enjoyed it. They have been able to figure out how to build the machines with minimal help. The container is nice--you can see all of the pieces and sort through them easily to find the one you want. The lid snaps on and holds tight so pieces stay inside while stored.

I can't believe how many models they came up with using the pieces provided. It shows you how much diversity there is in their building system. My kids enjoy building with it.
