We invested in many sets of K'nex when our sons were about 6 years old, thinking that it would be better to have a few really good toys that would challenge them for a long time than lots of other junk they would grow out of. At 16, they and their younger sister still enjoy building both their own creations and those we have instructions for. It is the one toy that they always enjoy together with no arguing. Their dad also enjoys creating the big builds! I would recommend you plan on buying several large sets--we have thousands of pieces bought back when large sets of 1500-2500 pieces were the norm on eBay. To solve the problems of trying to keep all those pieces from getting lost, we had a few ground rules:

1. They NEVER went outside.
2. I (Mom) was in charge of vacuuming that room. The kids invariably missed cleaning up pieces. I ransacked more than one vacuum load of debris salvaging pieces.
3. Most importantly, we finally bought one of those shelving units that holds the square/rectangular buckets to keep the pieces sorted. Amazon probably sells them now but we bought ours at Kmart. Since there weren't enough buckets, we used some Tupperware type containers and some of the boxes the K'nex came in as well for gears, tracks, motors and other larger pieces. As homeschoolers, I LOVED these both for their educational and diversionary value. It beats TV by a thousand miles and keeps their brains active. It was even worth the countless creations I had to take apart because the kids avoided that part of it. Still do but it's okay. I recommend these to everyone!

6 and 8 year old grandsons and their father "play" with this educational kit together for hours at a time. Always something new to learn. The scientific concepts are easy to understand with this hands-on approach to learning.

I had no idea what this toy was, but while my 10 year old grandson was ere this last month, he really had a blast making things with this toy. You do need to watch and help a little bit, but overall I think the parents had fun helping him just as much as he had constructing things.

The K'Nex educational series has many of the same assembly characteristics as Legos. But it demonstrates some basic principles of how things operate that Legos do not. . I've not seen my 10 year old grandson receive a Christmas present with more enthusiasm than this. I have bought two others in the series (wheels & axels, and Gears) and highly recommend them all.

k'nex are the coolest toys for kids that like to build. my son is 7 and is having a ton of fun building all of the things that it shows you how to make with the booklet that is included. after he builds all of those things, he then goes on to make up his own ideas. they are great for understanding engineering and just for fun. it really gets the imagination going. lots of little pieces though, we find them everywhere!

We purchased this K'nex set to help enhance our daughters understanding of levers and simple machines as she is learning in her science class. This kit was a great hands on lab to allow them to build different classes of levers and some simple pulley machines. We will look to purchase other kits for science in the future! Great buy and would recommend for your child to enhance their understanding of how levers and simple machines work.

Bought this for my 7 year old daughter. She loves legos. This was the first time we tried k'nex and this is a great piece to add to your collection. It kept her busy for a good 1.5 hours.
