This is Cheryl Holt's first foray into the medieval world of knights and chivalry and I must say I liked her first offering. Knight of Seduction is a passionate story about a kind gentle woman and a hardened world weary Knight.

Hugh of Manche has battled for his King in far away lands, seen man at his most brutal and is ready to settle and marry. He has been given a castle by his King and he knows he will marry one of the castle residents.

Anne is the illegitimate daughter of the former castle holder and she is treated like a servant by her step-mother. Her sister is rather spoiled and begs Anne to take her place and assume her identity with Hugh since she has no desire to marry him. Anne does this reluctantly and argues vehemently against a marriage with Hugh.

Anne is likable but her good nature is easily taken advantage of by her sister. She finds herself wedded to Hugh and even though he knows Anne is not who she claims to be, he is still happy to be married to her.

Hugh is a charming and fair man. He wants his relationship with Anne to work but he holds back his emotions and he is uncertain when it comes to dealing with Anne's feelings. He makes mistakes along the way but he is also quick to make amends. He is a dynamic personality.

Anne can be way too impetuous but overall she is a sweet girl who does not want to face the heartbreak her mother experienced by falling in love with the wrong man. This is a shorter novel but well written and the characters are colorful. Let's hope Ms Holt continues to write novels in this time period.

This is the first Cheryl Holt book I have read and I absolutely loved it. I was a little thrown off by the way they keep referring to her books at being "erotica". I will admit that I have not read erotica books but I was pleasantly surprised that this is NOT what I would consider "erotica" and there is actually a wonderful story to this book. The sex was the same as Julie Garwoods, Jillian Hunter, Suzanne Enoch, etc. and very mild sex, which is what makes the book so good because in some cases sex seems to be the only plot to some books, avoiding an interesting story and there is definitely a very good story to this book. I wish they would stop describing her books as "erotica". I have not read all her books so some may be more steamy than most, however after reading this book I wonder if this is a just another way the publisher is trying to sell her books but it is definitely not needed, her writing is very excellent and not repetitive. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes historical romance books.

As other readers have already mentioned, this book was o.k. but is seriously not up to par with Cheryl Holt's usual caliber of books. To be honest, I haven't finished reading Knight Of Seduction and find it extremely hard to keep reading due to my disappointment with juvenile terms used such as "manly passions", in addition to a Cinderella-type scenario that the author seems to be creating for the main character, Ann. Unfortunately, I didn't like that story much before in the past and think that it's much played out in the romance genre arena. I may try again in the future to continue reading this book if I can overcome my irritation with Ann's constant meddling from her step-mother, step-sister, and step-brother. Ann should take a more strict and staunch stance towards her extended family and throw them out on their ears, without looking back. Overall, the book seems o.k., especially for some light reading while waiting for something like an oil change to be done for a few hours, but it's nothing to call home about. It doesn't seem to hold my interest after only a few chapters.

Anne of Morven was the illegitimate daughter of Baron Ranulf, she had lived in the castle since she was four when her Mother Bedelia had died. Blodwin Ranulf's wife hated the beautiful Anne and took every opportunity to be cruel.
Hugh of Manche a loyal Knight of King Richard has now been given Morven and is the new Baron. It was Hugh who had hung Ranulf on King Richards orders, Ranulf was a traitor to the crown. Upon arriving at Morven Hugh has decided to marry the late Ranulf's daughter Rosamunde, but she had no intention of marrying him and begs Anne to pretend to be her. When Hugh lays eyes on Anne he decides that this beautiful girl will become his wife. But what will happen when he discovers the deception.
This is an entertaining and easy read, there is not much historical detail in this tale, so aficionados of this period in history might be disapointed. Hugh is a complex character one minute he is living up to his reputation as a ruthless and brave Knight, the next more like a naughty schoolboy. He is a self professed liar womaniser and all round scoundrel. Anne has seen firsthand the effects of an unfaithful husband on a wife when her own father had installed her mother in a house next to the castle, much to the chagrin of his wife Blodwin. There was not any real passion in this story instead it had a lighthearted feel, even with the characters who plotted Hugh and Anne's downfall.

I seem to be reading alot of medieval type books lately and this one is a quick read that does provide romance. To me the title doesn't really match the story. Yes, Hugh is a well known knight and is known to be a promiscuous man. His thoughts on women are probably accurate for the time period but his actions are not those of a noble knight. Of course not all knights were so noble right? He is a fierce knight who knows not how to love, an orphan who fought his way to the top, and loses who he is along the way. His faith & loyal service to the King do not fill the void in his life. He decides that he wants a home with heirs and accepts the Kings gift of a castle & option to marry the daughter of the former Lord.
Lady Anne is the bastard born daughter of that former Lord and is coerced into deceiving him to save her half sister from marrying this brutish knight. He learns of her deception and chooses to marry her anyway because of her beauty & her fiesty nature. He does, however, plan to continue living his life just as before & keep his paramour who waits for him. He initially gives no thought to his wife, her life or who she is. He expects her to obey him and accept whatever he says or does. There is chemistry there & the story moves along at a quick pace. There are some love scenes which are nicely done.
Hugh was very hard to like at first and I wanted to whack him many times but the author revealed his thoughts & helped me change my mind. Anne is very likeable, kind and sweet despite her mistreatment by her step mother and half sister. There are some small side stories but they are not deep enough to mention. I felt they detracted from the story sometimes. Can these two find happiness that eludes them? Can Anne accept this knight as he is or does he have to change his wicked ways? Will he change? Is love possible?
You'll have to buy/read to get the skinny on this. It's worth it.
