Book Description

Brassey's Modern Military Equipment March 2003
For the outdoorsman or soldier, a knife is not a luxury, it is a necessity. One of man's most basic tools, a knife can gather and prepare food, build and tend a fire, create a shelter and signal for rescue; and when the chips are down, it will do duty as a lethal close combat weapon.'Knives:MIilitary Edged Tools and Weapons' covers the whole range of blades available to the modern soldier, from fighting knives and bayonets through combat and survival knives, to the versatile multi-tools and folders, not forgetting special purpose blades such as the machete, special forces shovel, combat tomahawk and even the assegai.

It is often erroneously thought that these knives are designed solely for killing; this book seeks to show that they are in fact truly multi-purpose tools

The 'Brassey's Modern Military Equipment' series has been compiled to provide a well-researched, authoritative reference for soldiers at all levels in the command chain, as well as for the civilian observer. It provides concise and accurate intelligence on vehicles and equipment which are currently in service, with detailed descriptions, photographs and specifications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Catalog of Current Cutlery, May 24, 1998
This review is from: KNIVES: Military Edged Tools and Weapons (Brassey's Modern Military Equipment) (Hardcover)
If you are looking for a history of knives in the military or a guide to collecting military knives of bygone days, this is not for you. As a part of a series produced by Brassey's of everything from cannons to police protective gear, the emphasis is on what's available on the world market to the using service member for field carry---some few for fighting and most for working. The author has cataloged with clear photos and succint descriptions all of the field cutlery that one might desire to have and use from the GP pocket knive to the latest products of the Ontario company, and just about everything else.
Except for the so-called "Spetsnaz fighting shovel" all of this cutlery is practical. Included are most of the world's military issue and private purchase knives and tools. A chapter is devoted to each major type, including pure daggers, field utility knives, "jungle knives" and machetes, and the famous pocket tool kits so common today.
He does not cover the various national issue knives not commercially available, thus the Filipino issue jungle knife and similar others are not shown. (As this is not a history, cutachas are not covered!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice "Basic" Book on Recent Military Knives, December 9, 2011

This review is from: KNIVES: Military Edged Tools and Weapons (Brassey's Modern Military Equipment) (Hardcover)
This is a nice book that briefly reviews a number of recent Military & Fighting Knives (as well as other edged tools that have military uses). The author has a pleasant writing style and the black & white photos are of good quality. Some omissions, like references to Randall Knives under the Blackjack Knives and Cold Steel M-1 Knife sections, rather than a section on Randall Knives makes it appear that the author could not afford or find a REAL Randall knife to review.

Regardless, this is a good book for someone who wants an overview of modern military knives.
