While the cover has many animals displayed and there is a window on the box showing it to be chock full of building blocks and such, there aren't that many pieces in the box. At most they fill up 1/4 of the box and can make one animal shown on the cover and maybe another smaller creature. When you open the box you'll find a clear plastic box filled with pieces that is glued to the box's window. The rest of the box is pretty empty. While I wasn't expecting to be able to make all the animals, I was hoping there'd be enough pieces for my sons to create figures and explore designs without having to destroy the one thing they just made. There are some very specific pieces (elephant ears, trunk, eyeballs) but most of the pieces are large and generic. This works well with smaller sets such as Lego but sometimes makes it hard to find the right piece for what you want. As an example, there seems to be no good way to make feet and there is a design for a giraffe that uses a connector for a face that just looks awful. We also have the smaller K'nex pieces and there is no way to interface the two as one can do with other construction sets. Overall, the lack of pieces and the assortment limit what can be done with this set and stifle creativity.

I have kids ages 5 and 8, and although Kid K'nex are marketed as a pre-school toy, I think they are much broader than that. Certainly, their chunky size and easy-snap assembly makes them extremely pre-school friendly, but at my house, kids from 4 to 12 (and, truth be told, adults too) all seem to really like creating the friendly, goofy creatures with Kid K'nex. So I expect we will play with them for many more years, and I intend to add to our collection. This toy is not one we will outgrow soon. This paritcular set has some cute animal body parts (ears, eyes, trunk) but it also contains a large number of lego-like (Duplo size) pieces, which caught me by surprise. Initially I was annoyed that I hadn't noticed that before buying the set since we have an abundance of Duplo and always have arguments over eyes-ears-feet. This Kid K'nex set, however, has become a nice bridge between the two types of building toys, and I see even more animal-construction creativity coming out of my kids now that they have the full range of Kid K'nex AND Duplos to incorporate into their designs. I highly recommend this toy for kids who like to create. Even if your child hasn't shown a real aptitude for or interest in building toys, with the Kid K'nex the creatures are so cute and varied that they appeal to anyone - girls or boys, artistically inclined or not. It's a fun, educational, creativity-inspiring product.

Fun and durable. My son received this for his fourth birthday, and he has really enjoyed building with it; he gets it out almost every day. Each kit is small though, so we bought three different sets which seems to give him enough pieces for creativity.

Fun idea but my 2 year old is not interested in making any of the animals. Plus I wish there were a few more pieces so you could make more than one animal. Many of the designs use the same pieces and you are only given a few of them.

I ordered this set for my 5 year old for Christmas, and didn't realize until Christmas morning that the set is to be used with Duplo, not regular Legos. You don't have to have an extra Duplo set to make all of the cute animals in the Zoo Buddies set, and they are actually the perfect size and developmental level for a preschooler. She loves making the animals, and she can handle this size K'nex much easier than the regular K'next sets. I would recommend this product!

I bought this to supplement another K'Nex set that my children have. Whenever one takes the box out, everyone wants to play! The age says 3+ and not only does my 3 yr old love it, but so does my 7 yr old. It's a good toy because it encourages creativity, like Legos and is easy to put together. There is a sheet in the box that gives a few ideas of the "creatures" you can build, but that's just the beginning. This is a great toy that continues to be a favorite.

I have children ages 6, 4, and 2, and all of them enjoy this toy at their own level. We own almost all the Kid K'Nex sets out there and the possibilities of creation are endless. With this product you get instructions to some models, but children with come up with dozens of their own ideas. The characters are, as someone else wrote, goofy and cute. Even the Dino Friends set it cute. I would also agree that purchasing only 1 set leaves you wanting more. You need to have several of them in order to mix and match for more fun and more creative projects. I would recommend Kid K'nex to anyone who wants their children to explore and create on their own.

This set makes some fun creatures with eyes, ears, a trunk/tail, and cool moving joints for necks or legs - but it also has a good number of blocks that takek'nex sticks and are a certain size that mates the other plastic blocks you have of the same form factor. We already had some kid k'nex, and a big bin of duplos, and now we can build creations that merge the two. Plus, making creatures mean that it's a good toy for building and a good toy for imaginative play with the creations. |
