I was hesitant to buy a Kong because it doesn't look like it would be much fun for a dog. I saw it at the pet store and it smelled strongly of rubber. 3.0 out of 5 stars Big Chewer doesn't choose Kong!
My dog is an anbitious chewer...but he doesn't care for the Kong toy. Maybe he just wants something that is more easily destroyed...lol!

I was hesitant to buy a Kong because it doesn't look like it would be much fun for a dog. I saw it at the pet store and it smelled strongly of rubber. I bought it anyway because of the glowing reviews here and other websites. I bought the Large Red Kong for my 55lb Lab/Shepherd mix who is an average chewer. At first she seemed confused with what to do with it. I filled it with kibble and peanut butter and she chased it around the room licking it. I was afraid I had wasted my money. Then I put some quarter sized treats in it which fit perfectly in the opening. This forced her to chew the Kong to get the treats out. Now she loves her Kong and plays with it all the time without food. She just loves the way it bounces and will happily gnaw on it even when I wash it clean. The Kong manufacturers website has a size match function where you can enter your dogs breed and it will suggest the appropriate sized Kong. Many of these negative reviews would not have had any problems if they had taken the time to read the product description. The manufacturers suggest sizing up and/or getting the black Kong if your dog is a known aggressive chewer. But don't size up too much. There was a reviewer who bought a Large Black Kong for his 10lb chihuahua. The chihuahua was able to chew up and swallow the Kong probably because he could get his mouth inside the Kong at the edges. The dog was peeling the Kong apart from the opening. If he had bought the Small Kong, like the manufacturer recommended, he wouldn't have to pay for emergency surgery when his chihuahua swallowed the Kong. Kongs come in sizes from Small to XX-Large and in Red, Blue, Black, Dental and Puppy varieties.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps a German Shepherd Happy, January 3, 2005

This review is from: KONG Classic Kong Dog Toy, Large, Red (Misc.)
My German shepherd loves this toy. As both my husband and I work we have to leave her alone for 8 hours a day. I give her a kong filled with treats each morning and often when I get home that she is still working on getting the stuff out. Any toy that keeps this chewing machine occupied for that long is worth its weight in gold!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dog Toy Ever!, November 8, 2004
By
My Boston Terrier LOVES this toy. It is fun to use as a fetch toy and has an unpredictable bounce. My dog will stand on the couch, throw the kong himself, and runs after it when I am too busy to throw it for him. For a special treat, I put cheerios or dog food in the toy with a little peanut butter and he is occupied for a good 30 minutes trying to get every piece out. When he is in a chewing mood he will gnaw at this thing for a long time. He has never tried to chew on any furniture because he loves this toy so much. We have had this toy for over a year, and it does have some little pieces missing. The manufacturer says you should take the toy away in that case- but I don't think it is necessary. Small pieces will come right out the other end with no trouble!
Excellent toy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A breakfast/lunch/dinner bucket + excercise, March 8, 2007
I have used medium sized Kongs as a
breakfast/lunch/dinner bucket for our
Bichon for over five years. I stuff it with
a dried liver treat, a combination of
Eukanuba and Max and a Medium Dog Bone.

His five to eight trips a day for Kong
refills provides a break from my sedentary
home office activities. Recently I had
collapsed lung surgery and now use
the filling of Kongs for a six minute
treadmill break. He now joins me on the
treadmill for about the first three minutes
before jumping off to work on his latest
Kong. Kongs are a lasting feature in our lives.
The Amazon Provider of a two years supply
of Kongs (6) was excellent and very competitively
priced. I recommend both the Kong and Supplier
at a 5 star level.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kong dog toys have multiple uses, March 23, 2011

When you first look at a kong dog toy there is no tug handle, nothing to chew on (which is a plus if you are a human) and not alot of excitement for the dog - but stuff the thing full of peanut butter, put it in the freezer over night and the next day, your dog has a whole days' chewing and licking and fun in store.

There are many dog toys that promote stuffing stuff inside them, but most of the time the stuff inside comes outside pretty quick and you are left with whatever attention span your dog has leftover. I was told about freezing peanut butter (buy the great big store brand jars because you will go through it quick) from my breeder, my trainer, and the cashier at the petco store, so I figured someone had to be right and it was true. When I left for the day out went the dogfood dish and the kong. Naturally that great smelling dogfood was eaten first, but afterwards it was a peanut butter flavored kongsickle for hours. This size was well suited for a german shepherd dog, they make smaller and xtre-large sizes for yorkies and the "small horse" breads, but size wise this worked out great to give her a chew treat that squeezed out a little peanut butter each time, then served as a tongue exerciser. By then I was back home and the kong was predictably empty of all the good stuff.

I'm ordering two more here on amazon $2 cheaper than the petstore so that I can have a set of 3 in the freezer simply because it takes a while with a knife (I like to use a plasticware knife just to avoid putting silverware down the kong) to stuff these things. With 3 kongs, I only have to load em up every 3 days. A big jar of peanut butter has lasted over a month.

One trick with the knife is to slice off a piece of peanut butter from the giant size jar and then poke it through the hole and against the side of the inside of the kong in one motion - repeat all the way around and you've made the tongue exercizer - finish this off by stuffing peanut butter down the middle and even with the edge of the kong and it's now a chew toy that gives out that yummy tongue coating peanut butter for hours. Your dog will like it and have something other than shoes to chew on when a puppy.

I'm very happy with the design now knowing how to use it properly. I bought it again so that must say something!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for my dog, January 28, 2009

This is a wonderful product that I can safetly leave with my puppy when I've away. It gives her something to do & keeps her busy. I wish I had gotten a size bigger for my dog, not thinking of how small a medium is.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for puppies who like to chew, November 21, 2005
I have a miniature poodle puppy who eats everything in sight (including some unfortunate trips to the cats' litter box). I bought him one of these and fill it with the peanut butter stuff in a can. It's his favorite toy, or at least I think it is because he loses his mind every time I start to refill it. It's well worth the few dollars (and the price for the cans of peanut butter spray).

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Toy For A Dog Who Likes To Chew, March 9, 2006
A Kid's Review

When I got my 8 week old Golden Retriever puppy I bought him a small sized kong. He liked it although it didn't intertain him for very long. The liver and beef treats worked well and he liked them alot. At least he couldn't chew it open! I would rate it a 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars My beagle...., January 24, 2006
By
You know beagles love chewing.

My new beagle who came from a shelter loves to chew. I mean, he LOVES chewing anything he sees!!!

Since my husband and I work fulltime and we have to leave him in a crate all day, Every morning, I stuff low sodium peanut butter and dog treat, and he loves it lick and chew all day! And even after all day chewing, the Kong doesn't break at all.

I also like the Kong bounds and rolls everywhere because of the funny shape and he loves to chase.

This is the best dog toy I've ever got!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for My Puppy, September 8, 2011
This review is from: KONG Classic Kong Dog Toy, Large, Red (Misc.)

My Golden Retriever pup loves her toys. She knows them as her "babies." Ever since we brought her home she always had stuffed animals and tennis balls around her. She is spoiled rotten. She even has a bucket that holds all her toys, and sometimes we catch her sticking her big, golden head inside of it to pick the "toy of the day." It is such a cute scene. When she was a puppy, we trained her to open her own Christmas presents, but since she was a baby, she also knew how to chew anything open. My baseball that I caught from Jeff Bagwell was one of my puppy's victims.

As she got older she stuck with her doggie toys for the most part. The majority of her toys had stuffing and squeakers inside of them. But recently my mother made them all puppy proof: taking all the squeakers and stuffing out. Most people do not realize fluff and squeakers could be potentially harmful for dog's stomachs. One of my neighbor's friends had a Labrador Retriever that swallowed a squeaker from one of his toys. After spending almost 4,000 dollars on surgeries, the doctor still believes the dog is very sick.

I love my puppy. I want to make sure the toys she is playing with are safe for her.

The Kong was created from a man who loved his dog. He was a policeman, and his partner was a German Shepard. The dog Fritz loved to chew on rocks that wore down his teeth. One day, his owner, in frustration, tossed him a piece of his car that was made of rubber, and Fritz chewed on this instead.

Hence, the Kong was born.

The Kong is a perfect way for dogs to have a good time while still keeping their teeth in a healthy shape. Also, there is no way for the dog to eat any stuffing or a squeaker since the Kong is pure rubber. The Kong is also made with a hole in the middle to stuff treats inside. Some people stuff peanut butter in the toy for the dog to lick endlessly at.

My dog loves her Kong and is trained to get her toy once we say, "Go get your Kongie!" We wait as she switches her head from left to right, thinking, "Where did I put that thing?" She runs upstairs to retrieve it from under someone's bed. She also knows how to make someone get treats for her Kong. She will grab her toy, her tail wagging like a whip, bring it over to someone, drop her head on their lap and look up at them with her big, brown eyes. There is no resisting. She follows them to her treat box and sits waiting while they stuff cookies into the toy. Then, she walks over to her bed, Kong in mouth, and plops down while lifting her head high in the air to get all the bits of cookie into her watering mouth.

She is too smart, and once she is finished she comes back for more.

Kongs are a healthy, smart, and fun way for dogs and puppies to have a good time. Even though dogs do eat everything, the healthier they are the longer they will live. And a healthier dog means a happier companion.
