Our cat absolutely loved this toy. She didn't care about the catnip, but she loved scratching the cardboard. This style of scratcher is great for cats who like to scratch carpet or rugs rather than scratching vertical surfaces.
Unfortunately, the scratch toy didn't even last for two weeks before our cat had destroyed it utterly, including the cardboard base. I also feel like it's worth noting that the toy is not a plush mouse, as pictured on the site, but is a ball of tissue paper (which our cat totally ignored). I wish I had realized that I could get one with a plastic base for only five more dollars (Omega Paw SBE Scratch Box Everest) but I thought the Kong scratcher would be a bit more durable than it was!
I would recommend trying to weigh down the scratcher if your cat is over 7 lbs. I just stuck a little 10lb weight inside the little hole in the back. They are more apt to use the scratcher if it doesn't move around on them while they are scratching away.
I bought this online because the price was so much better. I bought the incline scratcher and 2 packages of refills for what it would have cost for just the incline scratcher at a local pet store.
If you're cat doesn't take to it you can't really blame the scratcher. Cats are persnickety creatures. My cat loves the incline scratcher but will not go near the pole with the rope for scratching.
The cat is happy, I'm happy and my furniture is spared.
It's not meant to be durable, it's a piece of cardboard that's meant to be destroyed, and my cats are happy to do it. I have a lot of different scratchers, but I always keep a cardboard incline one around because one cat likes to stand on them backwards with her butt in the air while scratching. Once the cats have decimated both sides I either buy a refill or an entirely new one, whichever is cheaper and/or easier.
When this one came they were both quite pleased. The catnip that came with it got everyone in a happy mood and they took turns rubbing all over it and scratching. They were pretty interested in the paper pompom thing hanging inside and I got some pretty funny pictures of them trying to get it out. The product is exactly what you would expect. The only thing that would make it better is if the refills were eligible for Prime shipping as well.
Update on 9/07/10: Be aware that the refills that Amazon sells to accompany this Kong cat scratcher are too big for the base. The only way to use them is to cut them down, which is a pretty messy process. Meanwhile, our Bergan is still going strong. (Their refills do fit their base.)

A lot smaller than it looks. There's no way most full size adult cats can fit in that hole. Arrived dented up pretty bad, but it's a cardboard cat toy so ohwell. Read morePublished 1 day ago by corey
