Oh, but those tabs...,
By
This review is from: KONG Stuff-A-Ball Dog Toy (Misc.)
My dog and I are generally the first to step in line with the "we heart kongs" crowd- she does just great with the red version of the original kong, but the stuff-a-ball is a little tricky. She's not a super aggressive chewer, really... but she is patient- and when it came to the point where she had a clump of peanutbuttery-kibble that she couldn't get to, she started working on the tabs. I didn't realize what she was up to until she'd gnawed one off, and was almost done with a second. So, the ball itself has held up for her, but I took a hacksaw to the remaining tabs around the opening (if you have doubts about the strength of the rubber, try sawing one!). The shape of the stuff-a-ball is more entertaining because my dog likes to kick it when it is stuffed with kibble alone- the original kong just spins in a circle. I absolutely will not be returning it, but I will also not be stocking up on these either. My dog is a 1 yr, 50 pound aussie-shep/lab mix. I'd highly recommend these for smaller, or maybe older dogs needing some entertainment or who like to work for their food, but if you are kong shopping because your dog tends to chew through things, I'd stick with other kong products instead. This one just has too many smaller parts. Also, write to the company and suggest they get a black stuff-a-ball out soon.

My dog LOVES this ball!,

Give my dog Shana a soft toy and in 30 seconds it will be shredded, unrecognisable, and spread from one end of the house to the other. Give her a tennis ball, and 2 minutes later it is gone.I bought Shana a Kong Stuff a Ball with the hopes that it would last her more than a day. 7 months later, the ball is still intact, and is her favorite toy! When I fill the ball with the special peanut stuff that I bought with it, it keeps her quiet for hours while she tries to lick it out. I have started filling the ball with treats, which she enjoys getting out. We also use this ball to play fetch with, and it is so durable. I can't believe it has lasted as long as it has. It still looks new, and has only a few minor teeth mark indents which is hard to believe! Although the ball seems expensive, it is worth it because it will last 100 times longer than anything else. If you have a pet that loves to chew, the Kong Stuff a Ball is for you!!! (how poetic)

This is the Kong toy that keeps my dog busiest the longest,

I have a 14 year-old 40 lb American Eskimo that can clean out the medium red Kong toys in no time flat--even if I freeze them and get creative with my stuffing. I switched to the medium black Kong toys for more aggressive chewers, and that slows her down a little. But this ball toy tops them all.I use the Kong Snaps, Stuff 'n' spray and Ziggies, and she'll usually wear out and curl up, satisfied, before it's empty. She's never really been interested in fetching, but this toy never fails to excite her and ignite her hunt instinct.

My puppy liked this toy much better than the regular kong. It was real easy to stuff the inside with dry kibble that would slowly fall out as well as putting peanut butter inbetween the lil ridges.Keeps her busy for a long time, and she hasn't managed to destroy it.

My picky eater loves this,

I adopted a small 10 pound mixed dog. He wouldn't eat for days. I looked all over the internet for ideas on how to get him to eat. Lots of suggestions but I found that when I put his food in this ball he loved it!! I put all kinds of treats in this ball and he rolls it around and gets the contents to fall out. I cut up carrots and put in the ball and he rolls it around the floor until they fall out so he can eat them. I know it is an unconventional way to use the KONG ball....but he loves it!

My 35 lbs. terrier has been devoted to this toy for two years now. He is on his fourth one, having worn and weakened the others after many hours of torturing it. When you buy it, buy a package of Checkups Dental Dog Treats which Amazon also carries. Break one Checkup in half and stuff it into the medium-size Kong and my pooch will consider it a project for the whole evening. Pushing it all the way into the new Kong might take hand strength and determination on your part. Getting it out requires crushing doggie jaw pressure, a series of well thought out strategies like dropping the Kong while perched on a footstool, or carrying it up a flight of steps and bouncing it down to the lower level, then checking each step for crumbles that may have dislodged on the trip down. All the time he is working on extracting the bone, he is cleaning his teeth on the Kong - I don't think the vet will ever have to have to anesthetize him and clean them again. My boy brings me the Kong right after he finishes his supper each night and cries like a girl until I stuff it with a Checkup and the fun can begin.

My dogs love this toy (with treats in it),

I bought the large and the x-large, not knowing which would be best. The x-large is too large for my dogs. They can use it, but it holds too much and the treats drop out too easily. I have a young Rotti and an old 110 lb. German Shepherd. The Rotti bounces and whacks it all over the place to get the treats. The German Shepherd has learned that if she brings it to an enclosed (small) space she doesn't have to chase it and can just push it around with her nose to get her treats. I use cut up turkey hotdogs and the dogs really love it. I'm back to buy more simply so I can have "spares" when I can't find where they put them , plus I like to run them through the dish washer for an "ultra clean" and I need to have the spares. These are tough toys and I seriously doubt that ANY dog can tear them up. WELL worth the money!

Good for kibble dispenser... not for dental,

Our dog (shepherd retriever mix) likes to play with it and roll it around to get the kibble out, but she doesn't really chew on it to make use of the dental ridges. Also, when she rolls it around all sorts of hair and dirt get stuck in the ridges so you have to wash it all the time. It does seem to be pretty sturdy though.

too large for jaws,

I bought this for my miniature poodle (17 lbs.), and it is HUGE! He can't begin to open his mouth wide enough to address the "slots" where you put squirt cheese! The holes in the end are wide, too (about 1"), so it would take some mighty big kibble not to fall out! The wrapper says 15-35 pounds (the size is not addressed anywhere in the description for this product - that I can find). This toy is 3" in diameter and 3" in height. I think it's more appropriate for a med-large dog like a dobe. I'm sending it back.A friend gave me a "flying saucer"-shaped toy ("Busy Buddy Twist 'n Treat"). The dog has to push the toy around to get the reward. The two halves unscrew, and you put kibble in it. Depending on how big the kibble pieces are, you adjust how far you screw the parts in toward each other. The first time, leave the hole open pretty much all the way so the dog can see result of his rolling it around. (I don't know if it's available here on Amazon, but if it is, I'm going to get a second one for my puppy. His big brother is in no way interested in sharing his!) mb |
