The zoom lenses are very cheaply constructed.

Just a quick review. This microscope was a bday gist for my 5 y/o. He truly loves this microscope and for the money, you can't go wrong. Yes, for twice the money there are other choices. But since I expect this to be his "first" microscope and not a professional instrument, it is well worth the price for the educational value. The one important aspect of this review that I thought was important was that when I researched this purchase I went initially through a website that listed the "top ten" kids microscopes. Anyhow, the main "con" listed on this microscope's review was that it didn't have an ON/OFF switch. While this was a concern of mine, it wasn't a deal breaker. After inspecting the microscope we were able to see that the light source is in fact able to be turned off. The easiest way to describe it is that the light source can either be the mirror or a battery powered light bulb. The light source choice is either one or the other (obviously) and when the mirror is the "choice" the the lighted bulb is OFF. So, while I know this may sound confusing, it does actually turn off. It is true, it doesn't have an ON/OFF switch, but its not as bad as it sounds. Again, as I said earlier in the review, well worth the money. And as a bonus, what kid doesn't like having a "carrying case" for anything! This one comes with that too!

The microscope is mostly plastic and works okay. It is nothing compared to your classic lab microscope though. I am 13 and I bought it for myself with my christmas money but was disappointed. It is for younger kids who have never really used one there is only one adjustment, for the stage. It is small and light weight, oddly small for a microscope. The zoom seems high but is not as clear and the lenses are plastic. This is probably a decent gift for younger kids, but DO NOT get this for any kid who has already used a microscope or who is 12-13+. Overall though you get what you pay for.

I got this for my 12 year-old girl. It was for her science expeirement. She absolutely LOVES it.
I got to try it out myself. I love the quality and the picture result it gives out.
It includes several things such as a full screen viewer for those who have trouble seeing
into the actual microscope viewer. It's got something to cut with, tweesers, glass tubes, 12 glass slates, a seperate magnifying glass, a glass dish for holding liquids too. I appreciate the manual very much.
It's very helpful. It lists things that you can review on your microscope and has 2 pre-made glass plates.
I rate this 5 Star and above! I really enjoy how the light at the bottom can turn on and off by rotating 180 degrees. It's great for kids to play and expeirement with. My daughter loves it and again so do I.
It holds a whole new world filled with amazing wonders.

I purchased this product after reading the reviews here. I knew that it wasn't going to be like the $600+ microscope I used in science class as a kid, but figured it would do the trick (viewing ferning patterns in saliva to determine peak fertility). In terms of viewing, it's not bad. But really, how much more would it have cost the manufacturer to install an on/off switch for the light?! It wouldn't be a big deal if there were simply a snap on cap for the batteries (2 x AA batteries), but one must remove the cheaply made gasket (which will undoubtedly tear after, oh, about ten uses), unscrew the little screw (at least they provide a screwdriver), pop the batteries in, screw in the screw and then replace the gasket...each time you use it. Being that we plan on using it daily, or at least many days in a row each month, it's just inconvenient to have to set it up and break it down with each use. If you only plan on using it sporadically, you may not mind, but for more frequent use, I'd recommend a higher quality microscope with an on/off switch!

Looks "cheap" but then - it is...
Functions fairly well though, If you want an adult 'real' microscope pay the three to four hundred bucks they start at.
For smart kids, it's great

I bought this scope after a lot of research and regret my choice. Unfortunately the review site I read praised the microscope's "durable metal construction," which as it turns out, is totally false. The scope is plastic and feels quite chintzy. I chose it over a slightly more expensive scope because of the features it promised--viewing screen, wall projections, camera attachment--only it turns out none of them work. I would not recommend this microscope to anyone and profoundly regret not having bought the My First Lab Duo-Scope Microscope. If there had been enough time between its arrival and Christmas I absolutely would have returned it for a refund.

Had several example slides, projector adaptor, etc. and was so much more than my 1st microscope that I got in the mid-50's at age 10 YO. Bought this one for my 11 YO grandson. This felt too much to him like 'school,' but he is 'obsessed' and has been occupied with his new Android Kids Tablet and "playing games." Hopefully, after the tablet newness wears off he will get bored and spend more time doing 'educational' stuff with the new microsopce (?!)

BTW, one review said needs battery On/Off switch---has one built into the light/mirror assembly that must be 'flipped over' to turn off.
