I will warn you - if you have a Lego afficionado in your house, these Kre-o sets will not compare, hands down.

Here is where my problem with the set comes in...as you put it together, simply looking at it cross-eyed will make pieces fall off.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a great toy, well made and it allows children to use their imagination and construct it in a number of different ways. The one drawback is the number of pieces, 542! The product is recommended for children ages 8-14, I would definitely not purchase this for an 8 year old. My almost 10 year old was very frustrated and my 13 year old and I had to end up constructing the model. Definitely for older children. When constructed it is an amazing toy and fun for both my 9 and 13 year old sons, just expect to a long evening playing and construction KRE-O if you are purchasing this for anyone 10 and under (unless they have an Einstein IQ and an equally long attention span).

Optimus Prime is the king of Kre-o!Optimus is the best of the best with Starscream coming a close second.I have most of the transformer kre-o construction sets including Ratchet,Prowl,Sideswipe,Bumblebee,Megatron, and Starscream for comparison. All of these sets are awesome and 100% worth the time and money to pick up.The Kre-o construction sets are a excellent way for parents to bond with a child while the child learns valuable construction and educational skills. The Kre-o bricks themselves are outstanding quality that matches lego and blows mega blocks out of the universe. The pieces are very solid while fitting securely and firmly together for an amazing finished product.Optimus is greatness all around with a solid build in robot or truck&trailer mode.Optimus has awesome poseability as well with secure ball joints for amazing battle poses while having great stability for displaying the autobot leader where you please. The durability is excellent also with the Kre-o pieces being very solid and well made so optimus can handle any decepticon enemy.Optimus has three different modes you can build in this set with a robot mode, truck&trailer mode, and a sweet battle station mode. The two main modes of robot and truck/trailer can take 4-5 hours while the battle station build is a little less time by 1-2 hours.Optimus comes with a sweet cannon brick with firing projectile for realistic battle action. The cannon brick is attached on the arm during construction of the robot mode.Optimus contains 542 pieces in the set which come packaged in seperate bags inside the box.You will want to be careful when taking all the pieces out not to misplace any because some are somewhat small.Optimus comes with 5 Kreons including Optimus,Bluestreak,Skywarp, and two stunt drivers.Read more ›

Super hard to build. I (the mom) did all the work! Once we got it together, it wants to fall apart at the waist. Instructions were hard to tell which color of blocks to use. My son doesn't like that it doesn't transform.

This is a tough toy to review. We gave this to my 6 year old son for Christmas because he was asking for it non-stop and he was really excited. Even though he is below the recommended age, he is able to do most of the construction himself and the instructions are generally well done (I would say on par with Lego). He has spent a considerable amount of time putting the set together in both robot and now truck form. I consider this a good thing in that it keeps him busy AND quiet. Once the set is together it's pretty impressive.

Here is where my problem with the set comes in...as you put it together, simply looking at it cross-eyed will make pieces fall off. In robot mode, simply picking it up will make the chest and shoulder pieces fall off. In truck mode, attempting to attach the trailer to the truck makes all sorts of pieces fall off of both. It almost seems that the set was meant to be put together by an adult and then left to sit on a shelf. Both versions are so fragile I'm not sure I see how it could be "played with" in the way it should be. The fact that pieces are continually falling off is really starting to bother my son and it's gotten sort of annoying. And for those who are comparing these to Lego sets, he has a Buzz Lightyear set that did the same thing. Some of these character items seem to be made with small pieces where there is very little holding sections together. This makes them fall apart when a door is slammed shut.

Overall, I would say that this is a really neat set and it will keep a child occupied. However, as a true "play thing" I can't say I recommend it. At such a young age things shouldn't be built and left to sit on a shelf.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Assembly Time:
Optimus Robot and Base is about 2 hours
To assemble truck you must completely disassemble Optimus and the base and reassemble the truck (probably a 2+ hour job)

Pros:
Lots of pieces, neat finished model
Neat mini figures

Cons:
Pieces are not Lego and compatibility is marginal (read more below)
Stickers go in different spots between truck and robot Optimus.
Design of robot could be slightly better
Ankle joints are stiff enough to support robot Optimus if they are bent at all
Optimus blue is darker than I would expect, it is navy blue that is almost black.

Bottom Line:
This is a nice set of building blocks that could be a lot of fun to play with, but some design flaws in the robot and lack of true compatibility with Lego brand pieces make me rate this a 3.

To talk about the cons, the quality of the pieces is not to Lego standards. There is flashing and molding spots visible on the pieces. The metallic pieces are neat, but again, the metallic pattern is not uniform with dark swirls mixed in. Some pieces have light damage to them from the factory (dented corners), but nothing that hurts usability. Some pieces have white stress marks on them.

Compatibility with Lego pieces is marginal. The flat pieces will stick together okay one way. I think it was Lego on top of Kre-O and the flat pieces would pop themselves apart. The Lego mini figures don't stick to the Kre-O pieces either.

After building the robot Optimus, I flipped through the directions and noticed the stickers go on a couple different spots on the truck.
